My husband and I enjoyed an early Valentine's meal at The Wild Oak on Sunday night. One of the many reasons to frequent this restaurant is the really top notch service. The staff go one better than their nearby competitors by being attentive without being overwhelming.

The food was delicious and generous. We started off with house marinated olives ($9) and sour dough bread ($1.50) made in their kitchen. We actually couldn't finish all of the olives but we tried!

We both had the same second course, slow roasted pork belly with chorizo and borlotti beans in a balsamic jus ($31.50).

For dessert I went with 3 varieties of house-made sorbet with crushed meringue and a balsamic reduction and my husband had chocolate fondant with raspberry fruit leather, & little raspberry jellies. Both desserts were around $17 and worth every penny.

We drank a bottle of local Yarra Valley Allinda Shiraz Cabernet which was very drinkable and very reasonable at $35.

The Wild Oak is perfect for a special occasion for two or with a group of friends.

Ben Higgs is the owner and head chef who also runs a cooking school as well. Details are on the website .
