Wild Nights are on again at the Werribee Zoo as an activity for the winter school holidays. This is the closest most of us will get to a night spent in the wilds of Africa.

I haven't done the winter version but I have certainly done the summer one and it was fantastic.

You can enjoy the African animals and watch a shadow puppet theatre and explore the secret garden.

These wild winter nights feature lots of exciting and warming activities. You can watch the fire twirlers and toast marshmallow around the campfire and enjoy glow in the dark activities in the interactive Glow Zone.

The night starts at 5:30pm when you walk around the Pula Reserve where you can spot lions, wild dogs and cheetahs getting ready for their bed times and watch the hippos having their nightly mud bath. Lots of animals are quite active at dusk and beyond.

You can visit the Bandicoot Hideout. This is a new exhibit that's home to the eastern barred bandicoot, squirrel gliders, growling grass frogs and the tawny frog mouth.

Food is available at the Meerkat Bistro which has a special winter menu and isn't actually a bad place to eat for adults as well as for children.

There is a show where you can see the African cats as they leap, hunt and climb. There are two of these shows each night but these have a limited capacity so let the zoo know at admissions that you are interested in attending.

There is also a new indoor play space, Ranger Kids, where kids can play vets and rangers, caring for toy animals in the medic tent as well as sitting in the wooden helicopter. This is an area where parents can also have a bit of a relax.

So bring your torch and a sense of adventure
