If you are looking for a unique adventure for your family these school holidays, Wild Nights at Werribee Open Range Zoo is perfect. The zoo is keeping its gates open after dark, so you can see what the animals REALLY get up to at night. There will also be lots of free activities to keep the kids entertained. It will certainly give the kids something to talk about at Show and Tell when school goes back.

Each night of the June/July school holidays, Werribee Zoo will be keeping its gates open until 8:30pm, so you can experience the zoo in the dark. Bring along a torch, and see if you can spot a lion or cheetah on the prowl, or a hippo on the beach. See what some of the nocturnal species get up to when the sun goes down - such as squirrel gliders, or the critically endangered Eastern Barred Bandicoot. (FY I- the gorillas and the meerkats will be in their night dens, but there will be plenty of other animals to see.)

In addition to visiting the animals, there will also be nightly shows by fire-spinners, an interactive 'Glow Zone' where kids of all ages can enjoy hula-hooping and glow-in-the-dark circus fun, and a campfire where you can enjoy free marshmallow toasting.

The Meerkat Bistro will be serving up delicious meals to warm your belly on the cold nights. The popular indoor kids play space, 'Ranger Kids' will also be open, so the kids can pretend to treat sick animals in the Medic Tent, or fly the cool wooden helicopter.

For something extra special, there will also be a Dusk Safari Tour available between 5-6pm each night. Here you will be able to see the animals of the African Savannah roaming the grassy plains (think rhinos, zebras and antelopes). However, this experience does cost a bit more ($60 for adults, $40 for children, including admission to Wild Nights). It is best to book in advance so you don't miss out (call 1300 966 784).

Whether you're a regular at Werribee Zoo, or thinking of going for the first time, this is a great way to experience all it has to offer.

Wild Nights will run regardless of the weather, so make sure you bring your gumboots, raincoats and a sense of adventure.

Entry to Wild Nights is from 4pm (last entry 7pm), and gates close at 8:30pm.

Werribee Zoo is located 35 kilometres west of the Melbourne CBD, along the Princes Freeway.
