We have heard a lot about the opportunity to feed dolphins at Tin Can Bay, but haven't had the chance to try it.
When we planned our next weekend getaway, we chose Tin Can Bay and Rainbow Beach.

As the dolphins arrive to the Barnacles Dolphin Centre around 7 am, we chose to spend the night in Tin Can Bay.

At 7 am, we headed down to the boat ramp and the dolphins were already there. We were very lucky, because two of them came. As they are wild animals and not trained, there are days when they don't show up at all.

While we stood in the water, hoping for the dolphins to touch us (as people are not allowed to touch them), the volunteers told us the story of the place. Three generations ago a young dolphin came to the Bay, it was badly hurt, but the fisherman nurtured him back to life. Since then (30 some years ago), the dolphins come back every day and enjoy the treats that people give them.

They do come really close to you, but rarely touch- it is still very cool.

By 8 am, lots of people arrived and the feeding started.
We could buy fish (for $5) and the volunteers directed us to the dolphins to feed them. It was an amazing experience to be this close to this rare breed, the wild Indo Pacific Dolphins.

After the feeding we had breakfast at the coffee/ gift shop.
The Dolphin Centre is very well prepared for the early morning visitors.
