Sitting on a hillside just two kilometres from Rutherglen post office,
The Wicked Virgin Olives & Calico Town Wines is worth a visit for a taste of the region. Established in 1999 by John and Lauren Nowacki, the family-owned and operated establishment has over two thousand olive trees on its grounds.
The mudbrick cellar door is a converted shearing shed and is a cosy comfortable space for
wine tastings, dining, functions and purchasing
olive products.
All day tea, coffee, homemade cake and
light lunches including soups, salads, platters and hot pots are on offer here and it is a great way to sample some of the produce available. We enjoyed the crisp autumn air and beautiful surroundings whilst lunching on a couple of platters washed down with a glass or two of Calico Town wines.
The area is rich in the history of the Victorian goldfields. Once a town full of calico and canvas tents, there is even a poppet head above a derelict goldmine on the property.
Boutique accommodation for two is available in a repurposed double-storey still house,
The Wicked Villa . For $250 per night, it is luxurious, romantic and private. A breakfast hamper is provided daily with a complimentary cheese platter on arrival.
Visit one of Rutherglen's tiny wineries for a relaxing experience full of quirky features and colourful characters like Charlie the cockatoo.
