I love Wicked. I can easily admit that it is one of my favourite musicals, not only because the music is fantastic, but mostly because of the way it takes the classic story of The Wizard of Oz and completely turns it on its head.
For those who haven't heard of Wicked it follows the story of Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, starting with her birth and ending with her encounter with Dorothy (and that deadly bucket of water). However, in this rendition of the story we get to see Elphaba from a different perspective and how things actually went down before Dorothy showed up. Did you know she was actually friends with Glinda the Good Witch at university? I won't ruin any more of the surprises, as it's well worth experiencing them yourself at the show.
As for the cast, Jemma Rix who plays Elphaba is fantastic and she plays the role incredibly well. Susie Mathers plays a great Galinda. And although I have nothing against Bert Newton, I definitely enjoyed Simon Gallaher's performance as the Wizard much more this time around.
As usual, the production does not stray much from the original US version. So if you've seen it before you're in for much of the same, which is totally fine as it's a lot of fun.
