The extravagant musical theatre production WICKED kicked off its 10th anniversary Australian tour in Melbourne last night, spellbinding a star studded audience as The Regent Theatre transformed into a miniature Emerald City.
The green-tinged Broadway hit WICKED: The Untold Story of the Witches of Oz based on Gregory Maguire's 1995 novel, Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West tells the enthralling tale of two unlikely friends Elphaba and Glinda, that soon become the two witches of Oz.
Maggie Kirkpatrick returns to the stage as the audacious Madame Morrible, and theatrical performer Reg Livermore as the the wonderful Wizard.
Newcomers Steven Danielsen playing Fiyero, Emily Cascarino as Nessarose, Edward Grey as Boq and Nathan Carter as Doctor Dillamond slot into their roles perfectly and work their theatrical magic on stage.
It is visually evident that the team behind WICKED invest a lot of time and money into its lavish production, giving audiences a true spectacular Broadway experience. Each elaborate set shines with spectacular lighting displays, and highlights include the mechanical red eyed dragon above the stage aswell as the Wizard's booming metal-faced facade.
Costumes are simply beautiful with Glinda's vintage inspired frocks, Madame Morrible's bustle dresses and Fiyero's dapper outfits.
Without giving too much of the story away, you will leave WICKED thinking very differently of the Scarecrow, Tinman and most certainly The Wicked Witch of the West, and the show will have you questioning which character best fits the true title of Wicked.
Following a limited Melbourne season, WICKED moves onto Sydney's Capitol Theatre from 20 September, 2014 and onto Brisbane's Lyric Theatre from 15 February, 2015.
Your friends will be green with envy when you tell them you've got tickets to WICKED, the award winning magical Broadway extravaganza. Tickets go on sale on Monday 12 May, although pre-sale tickets can be purchased here. Don't miss it.
