After a long hiatus [i]Wicked[/i] the smash hit Broadway musical returns to Sydney this August at the Lyric Theatre, with an updated production that is set to have audiences believing in magic once again. After much anticipation, the Sydney production of Wicked recently announced the casting of its two leading ladies, and theatre-goers couldn't be more thrilled with the brilliant selections. Playing the role of Elphaba the "Wicked Witch of the West" is Sheridan Adams, who has been a fan of the musical since her teenage years. In the role of Glinda "The Good" is the extremely talented Courtney Monsma, who fell in love with the show when she saw it as a high school student.


Courtney Monsma couldn't be more excited with landing the role of Glinda after just finishing her amazing run as Anna in the Australian production of Frozen. "Wicked was one of the first professional shows I ever saw. I remember getting a ticket through my high school, and I was absolutely mesmerised," says Monsma. "As a kid, I was obsessed with The Wizard of Oz, so having that connection, it blew my mind. I'm so excited to be in Wicked; this is a dream come true. I've always loved the role of Glinda. The sparkle and the gowns drew me to her, but I think Glinda has a beautiful heart, and I love the journey she gets to go on throughout the show."


Sheridan Adams, who has been a fan of Wicked for years, is equally thrilled to be playing the role of Elphaba. "Wicked is a very special show for so many people, including me. Elphaba has been my dream role since I was young. My first experience was on YouTube, watching Idina Menzel sing 'Defying Gravity', and I sang it all the time," she says. "Then my Mum bought me The Grimmerie, and I finally got to see the show when I was 16. This is a dream come true."


Wicked has been a fan-favourite since it premiered on Broadway in 2003, and has since become a global phenomenon. Taking place in the magical world of The Wizard of Oz, the musical tells the untold story of the witches of Oz and their unlikely friendship. The production features unforgettable songs including "Defying Gravity" and "Popular", as well as stunning sets and costumes, and powerful performances.



The original 2003 Broadway production featured Tony Award-winning performers Idina Menzel in the role of Elphaba and Kristin Chenoweth in the role of Glinda. The immense success of the show took both performers' reputations into the stratosphere, with both Chenoweth and Menzel going on the have fabulous Broadway careers, and Menzel even being asked by Disney to voice the character of Elsa in the original animated movie Frozen.



With the casting of Sheridan Adams and Courtney Monsma, the Sydney production of Wicked is sure to be a hit with audiences of all ages.
