Top 6 Reasons Why August is Cool

August might be summer time, but it is a pretty cool month. In fact it is a lot of people's favourite. So what makes August so wonderful?
1. Name
What's in a name?
August is not only the name of the eight month of the year, but it is also a word meaning 'respected' and 'impressive'. Very fitting. August should be an august month.
But August wasn't the month's first name. Back in Anglo-Saxon times it was known as
Weod Monath or 'weed month'. Doesn't sound quite a impressive does it? Although it is not without an element of truth. I prefer to call them wild flowers though. Sounds much better.
Before we moved over to the Gregorian Calendar, the Roman Calendar had it down as the sixth month of the year, and therefore called it
Sextilis Mensis or 'sixth month'. If you don't take account for the fact that the name is Latin,
Sextilis is rather ironic, considering one of its star signs is Virgo.
Later the Romans changed the month to
Augustus after their Emperor.
2. Days
Did you know that August never starts on the same day as any other month? August starts on Friday this year, but no other month does. The only exception to this rule is on a leap year, when it starts on the same day as February.
In contrast, August always ends on the same day as November's last day. This year both months end on Sunday.
3. Blackberries
August is the season for blackberries. It used to be that this is when blackberries started coming out, but in recent years, the warmer wether has seen them arrive as early as July. August is still the best month to go picking though, and you can make delicious blackberry pies and blackberry jam.
4. Holidays
August was always my favourite month when I was a child, for one very simple reason. It is the only month in the year where children do not have no school whatsoever. A whole month off. How great is that? At least for the kids. Parents might find it a bit of a pain trying to find cover.
5. National Events
August has lots of quirky (inter)national events. Here are just a few:
Edinburgh Festival - Scotland
Goat Cheese Month - USA
Happiness Happens Month - USA
Panini Month - International
Watermelon Day - USA - 3rd August
Vinyl Record Day - USA - 12th August
Left-handers Day - International - 13th August
Lemon Meringue Pie Day - USA - 15th August
Toasted Marshmallow Day - USA - 30th August
6. Birthdays
There are lots of noteworthy Birthdays in August too, such as:
