Who Speaks For Me? at Riverside Theatre

Who Speaks For Me? Is a storytelling show which takes us, the audience, through personal narratives and photographs from the powerlessness of those who do not have it. It is an emotional journey from tears at times to humorous moments.



The production is held at the Riverside Theatre, Parramatta. It explores the vagaries of language, the nuances lost in translation and sometimes the hilarious consequences of misunderstanding it.

The show takes you inside the world of people who just moved to a foreign country, where they know no one, they cannot speak the language and the way of their living is completely different to what you know. It really puts into perspective what the many people of this country go through or went through.



Born and raised in Australia my whole life, I did not have to endure this move or these struggles. It was interesting as well as a great insight on how people feel or felt with the displays of struggles of arriving in a new country and not being able to speak the language.



The show overall takes us into the lives of three families from Bhutanese, Vietnamese and Cambodian backgrounds living in Western Sydney as they relate their experiences using personal stories and photographs.

The writer and producer Annette Shun Wah, certainly did challenge the notion that just because someone does not speak the language, they cannot contribute to society. She quotes "I also believe stories like these give us a fuller and more accurate picture of contemporary Australian life, which is vital if we are to truly understand who we are".



This intimate multi-lingual, multi-generational storytelling show, is certainly one show not to miss. With personal narratives and photographs, Who Speaks For Me? is an emotional insight on people's experiences.

It certainly did take us into the heart of a migrant's journey.
