We didn't know what to expect as we walked up the road towards our accommodation for the night. It was Easter weekend and we had left the booking of our trip far too late. The only place that was within our price range had been in Sorrento and all we knew was that it had shared bathrooms and a free continental breakfast.

I had imagined a back-packers type affair and as the stately building came into view, I was pleasantly surprised.

Part of Oceanic Sorrento , the Whitehall Guesthouse was constructed in 1903 and is one of the longest running guesthouses in the area.

Inside is luxurious but comfortable and facilities include swimming pool, barbecue, courtyard and sweeping balconies. Our window looked out onto the bush and the hills behind us and the bathrooms were clean and hotel-like.

That evening, we sat on the first floor balcony and listened to the sea roar against the rocks at Sorrento Back Beach , only a 5 minute walk away. Our room contained towels, soap, linen and a little fan heater so we were warm and comfortable throughout the evening though the night was a chilly one.

In the morning, we came downstairs to the continental breakfast and were met with a satisfying spread. Laid out on the tables were multiple varieties of bread, crumpets, English muffins and spreads, as well as cereals, fruit, tea and juice. I was happy to see a jug of soymilk provided with the cereals, making this a vegan friendly continental breakfast. Sitting down in the outside courtyard with one of the many complimentary newspapers we were able to eat our breakfast and enjoy the morning sun.

Though we only stayed the one night, friendly staff and beautiful surrounds made this a place I would choose to stay in again. It would be a great place to stay in with a few friends as it is relaxed and close to both the township and the beach.
