Melbourne shines on White Night

Melbourne struts its stuff on White Night, 23 Feb

For the first time ever, Melbourne is taking part in the global 'White Night' initiative, hosting free art and culture events in the CBD from 7pm to 7am on Saturday 23 February, 2013.

For the event, Melbourne is divided into precincts:

Wonderland - Flinders Street between Swanston and Russell Streets, including Federation Square, ACMI, St Paul's Cathedral and Forum Theatre events

Theatre of Dreams - Flinders Street from Elizabeth Street to Swanston Street, incorporating Flinders Street Station.

Elizabeth What Were You Thinking? - Flinders Lane from Elizabeth Street through to Russell Street, including Degraves Street and Centre Place.

World Above - Swanston Street between Flinders and Collins Streets; and Collins Street between Swanston and Russell Streets, includes City Square and Melbourne Town Hall.

Light Fantastic - Encompasses Birrarung Marr, Alexandra Gardens, Princes Bridge and the Yarra River, to the east of St Kilda Road.

Loved and Treasured - Southgate Arts & Leisure Precinct, Eureka Skydeck and the Yarra River to the west of St Kilda Road.

Pictures and Posers - The Arts Precinct and St Kilda Rd, includes Hamer Hall, Arts Centre Melbourne and National Gallery of Victoria.

Outer Limits - Off the grid locations include Melbourne Museum and State Library of Victoria.

The program of events is incredible - too much for a single person to cover in one night, but that means there is plenty for everyone. Most of the events are free, but if you do have to pay, it is generally the normal venue entry price. Some of the ones that appealed to me were the following;

Classic Screen Test (Wonderland precinct) - Make your favourite movie scenes your own at ACMI. Deliver classic one-liners to camera, with full lighting, background, sound and camera for the whole audition experience.

Theatre of Dreams (Theatre of Dreams precinct) - Flinders Street Station is being transformed into a proscenium arched stage for a concert with some well-known names, including the Rockwiz Orkestra and The Cat Empire.

Mark 1:28 (Elizabeth What Were You thinking? precinct) - Melbourne based lighting designer Phil Lethlean celebrates Melbourne's almost religious devotion to sports stars in a light installation.

The Beasts From Behind (The World Above precinct) - Shadow play in a creative way - put yourself in a projection work and see what your shadow gets up to with some mysterious beasties of the night.

From the Deep (Light Fantastic precinct) - a spectacular water and light show on the Yarra, running every half hour and featuring 40-metre high water spouts and lasers.

Southgate Cinema (Loved and Treasured precinct) - all night short films, with a focus on Melbourne film-makers who started out in this format then went on to become big names, including Adam Elliot, Warwick Thornton and Nash Edgerton. The restaurants, cafes and food court at Southgate will also be open late.

Bouquet Final 2 (Pictures and Posers precinct) - an incredible dynamic installation by French artist Michel Blazy, consisting of thick white foam powered by electric pumps slowly flowing to the ground from a ceiling-high tower. Sounds both weird and amazing!

All Night Music: Voices Under the Dome (Outer Limits precinct) - the State Library presents three wonderful vocal artists; the Exaudi Youth Choir, Dean Frenkel, and Claire Patti. They will be creating transcendent and beautiful sounds to carry you away into the night.
