The Swan Valley is a 25 minute drive from Perth and is home to dozens of historical attractions, wineries, arts and crafts centres, wildlife encounters, restaurants and cafes, breweries and distilleries and gourmet food factories and specialist shops.

It really is a great place to go. There is so much you can do in the Swan Valley, it can be hard to decide how you're going to spend your time there! Do you go to the Nougat factory or the Cake and Macaroon factory? So many choices!

If I could make a suggestion you should take an afternoon to visit Whistler's Chocolate Company. I had no idea this place even existed until last weekend. I was checking out some lists of things to do in Perth with kids and it came up and imagine my surprise when I realised it was just fifteen minutes from our house and we'd never even been. "How have we not visited this place yet?" I thought. I told my husband and daughter to get in the car and off we went to check it out.

Whistler's Chocolate Company has been making chocolates for over 40 years. This proudly owned family operation has the distinction of being the longest running chocolate company in Western Australia. You can find the Whistler's Chocolate Company at 506 Great Northern Highway in Middle Swan. It is surrounded by wineries and is sandwiched in between the Great Northern Distillery and Taylor's Art and Coffee House.

Whistler's Chocolate Company is set on a huge block of land. When you step inside the first thing you will see is the chocolate showroom which is where you can shop for favourites like rocky road, coconut rough, peanut brittle, macaroons, homemade fudge, ice cream, chocolate buttons, giant freckles, chocolate liquorice, chocolate bars in every flavour, chocolate pretzels, honeycomb and chocolate covered snakes and lolly frogs. I had a lot of fun exploring this room. I really liked the umbrellas and brown light shades they had hanging from the ceiling. The whole place had a really nice vibe to it. I was pretty entranced.

After you buy something to eat or drink, why not take a seat in the very luxurious Cocoa Lounge and spend the afternoon in a nice relaxing setting?

Or if you don't want to do that you could check out Whistler's Chocolate Savannah. It is the highlight of their showroom. This chocolate masterpiece is enclosed in a glass case and is a real wonder to behold. The people at Whistler's have lovingly crafted chocolate into trees and huts and hippos and monkeys and giraffes. It is pretty cool.

If you don't want to buy something sweet to eat why not buy some arts and crafts instead? If you're looking to pick up a souvenir or a present for someone else Whistler's have a delightful range of knick-knacks to choose from.

At the back of the showroom, there is a large café where you can buy a selection of hot and cold drinks, sweets and nibbles, biscuits and cakes, indulge in a light lunch or pick something off the kid's menu. One thing that stood out to me was you can get a plate of chocolate fondue with a side of either marshmallows or mixed lollies. Wow!

Just outside the café, there is a garden that has a large grassed area, outdoor seating, sandpits and chalkboards for the kids to draw on. You could take your food outside and enjoy a nice leisurely afternoon tea while your kids play in the sandpit. How much fun does that sound?

Whistler's Chocolate Company is a fantastic place to visit. I highly recommend it.
