Meet Masterchef Chef Marie Lyons and Murray Lyons Winemaker
Yarra Valley with stunning rolling hills - Photos by Tricia Ziemer
Heading out to the Yarra Valley gives you the excitement of magnificent scenery and stunning local wines to taste with fresh local cuisine. And there are some very big and well known Australian wineries and their names or now on the lips of international wine connoisseurs. But tucked in between our famous greats, are family-run boutique wineries. They are run with love and devotion and have some stellar wines.
Lunch right on the edge of the vines at Whispering Hills
Whispering Hills Vineyard is a family-run business with a wood fire pizza restaurant nestled at the bottom of its vineyard. They established it in1985 upon the red, rich soils of the Upper Yarra Valley, and have been producing elegant cool, climate wines for over twenty vintages. These lovely drops were created by Murray Lyons, their winemaker. And except for the sparkling, it is all made onsite.
Marie, Chef, Owner, and ex contestant on Masterchef
Chef Marie Anne Lyons' (Owner) passion for wood-fired cooking is infectious. As an ex Masterchef contestant, you can expect Marie to serve up rustic, authentic Italian cooking with an edge that shows her skills in the kitchen. The wood-fired pizzas served for lunch every Saturday and Sunday are handcrafted from scratch, all cooked on the hearth of Marie's design. It was built by son Nick Scott in October 2014.
The Chardonnay was lovely, dry, dusty on the nose with a fruit finish.
Their newer wines are even more spectacular. See the website for their newest releases including a Cab Sav, Grande Cuvee, and 2018 Heathcote Ironstone Block Syrah, to name a few.
You must go for a tasting. It is well worth the trip. Especially go on the weekend because then that 13-tonne wood fire is cooking up fresh-made pizzas from fresh local produce of fruits, vegetables, prosciutto and more. Gourmet all the way.
Whispering Hills is at 580 Warburton Hwy, Seville. Open daily from 10 am to 6 pm for wine tastings and weekends from
12 pm - 4 pm for yummy wood-fired pizza. The smells are tantalising the second you walk in. During the week, they also put together a wonderful cheese platter, instead of pizza, if you want to stop and enjoy their wine and have a snack to absorb. The only thing I could suggest is to make a small cheese platter and a large. Because it is a very healthy size platter with beautiful local cheeses.
The ambience is lovely with both indoor and alfresco dining in the shade of a graceful building. Long tables take big families and smaller tables take intimate groups. In the winter, the fire crackles nicely. Some outdoor tables at the back are right on the edge of the vineyard, so you feel a steeped in its history and the family. And as you sit on the outdoor tables, you understand and savour the name of the winery. You are so close to the vines, you do hear them whisper in the wind. Mesmerising and peaceful.
