If you blink while driving between Nanango and Kingaroy, you may miss the little settlement of Coolabunia, but, if you are curious, like me, you will follow the signs to a delightful café, only a few metres from the D'Aguilar Highway. Whipbird Café is a delightful café, in an old chapel, offering not only wonderful food, but art, and a range of products grown locally.
You will be made most welcome by David and Fiona Murray – David is front of house and Fiona does the creating in the kitchen – and you can enjoy a range of tasty home made meals and cakes, all made on site.
The indoor area is delightful, with artworks by local artists on the walls, little nooks for you to enjoy the ambience with your friends or family, and an outdoor area surrounded by bushland – you certainly know you are not in the city out here.
Whipbird Café is open on Friday from 10 am to 3.30 pm, and on Saturdays and Sundays from 9 am to 4 pm. There's a special Brunch Menu on Saturday and Sunday from 9 am too. They will open on Thursdays for groups – but you will need to book 5 days ahead.
Locally brewed ginger beer, freshly squeezed juices (made to order), locally grown Kingaroy navy beans (baked beans), freshly made pancakes, home made scones, and so much yummy fare are all available at Whipbird.
Also available are the homemade jams, marmalade, pickles and relish, lovingly made by Fiona.
The Café is also the Cellar door for Kingsley Grove Estate Wines.
Disabled parking is available at the rear of the café.
