People often avoid learning to swim after a certain age, but whatever your age you should have a strong grasp of this essential skill. After a bit of research, I found out that there are some very reputable organisations offering not only basic beginner courses, but classes for people at different levels of comfort with being in the water.
Most of the better-known aquatic centres offering these classes are in areas closer to inner Sydney, but there are also some good options in Western Sydney, and private tutoring available at various locations.
Here is some of what Sydney has to offer:
Sydney Olympic Park Aquatics Centre, Homebush
This Sydney Olympic Park Aquatics Centre offers three levels of learn to swim classes which address varying levels of capability and confidence – Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced.
The Beginner classes are nice and small with only six learners per class, so attendees will have a good opportunity to receive careful instruction.
Cost: $17/lesson.
Sydney Uni Sport and Fitness, Sydney
The Adult Learn To Swim classes include Introduction to Water - which is designed for adults who have not been in the pool before. These classes are super-small with only three swimmers per session. Classes focus on water safety and learning to float and tread water.
For the slightly more adept, they have the Confident Beginner class for those who are a little more confident in the water. This class involves learning freestyle as well as backstroke.
Cost: $19.50/lesson.
Macquarie University, North Ryde
Their Swimming Fundamentals course is for adults who are absolute beginners and who may be struggling with confidence issues in the water. Students in this class will learn flotation and basic swimming skills in a 45 minute class of six students.
Cost: $37/fortnight
Sydney Community College at Enfield Swimming Centre, Enfield
The Adult Learn To Swim class covers learning to move through the water with the aid of a kick board, floating on your back, breathing techniques, learning to swim and increasing distances swum.
Cost: $165/10 sessions
Aquatics Safety Training Academy, Seven Hills
Those hoping to take lessons in Western Sydney can head over to Seven Hills. The Aquatics Safety Training Academy offers 45 minute classes from Beginner level up, and charge a $6.00 membership fee at enrollment. Make up classes are fortunately available for missed classes.
Cost: $15.50 per class on a term basis
Leichardt Park Aquatic Centre, Lilyfield
The Beginners program is specifically aimed at those who are unable to exhale underwater, or float, or propel at least some distance through the water. This class also focuses on those with fears and a lack of confidence water. They offer a slightly more advanced option as well, for those who have a little water experience and can at least propel themselves through the water for a couple of metres.
Classes run for 45 minutes with a maximum of seven students per class.

For those who will feel more comfortable learning in a private session, Adult Learn To Swim tuition is available at Swim With A Smile. They have a lot of different options, meaning you can find exactly the sort of private tutoring you need for your particular situation.
Their Discovery Package is where a lot of beginners will probably want to commence their training. This package covers the basics of breathing in the water and floating, followed by kicking and paddling. They also have the Conqueror Package for those who are ready to progress quickly to swimming. Includes the basics first, followed by freestyle, breaststroke and backstroke. Available at various locations.
Cost: Refer to Swim With A Smile website for breakdown of private tuition fees and venues.
FunFitness, Croydon
This is a great option if you would like a little more privacy while learning to swim but don't actually need private lessons. FunFitness offers classes for beginners that have a maximum of only four students per class. They also teach this class in a private area with no spectators - which is a big draw for those who may be particularly tentative about taking swimming lessons. Classes are designed for those with no swimming ability and run for 30 minutes.

Dolphin Swim School at Parramatta & Granville Swimming Centres
The school offers some of the cheaper Adult Learn To Swim Classes in Sydney. The Dolphin Swim school emphasizes water safety and smaller classes so everyone gets attention from instructors.

Being able to secure a place in a class is often dependent upon the maximum number of learners they accept per class, class terms and other factors. Please be sure to always confirm the class prices, venues and availability with the hosting centre while booking.
