Over the last few years the number of home grown distilleries producing their own whiskey, gin, vodka and other spirits and liqueurs has grown exponentially. If you're after a something local to add to the liquor cabinet you've got plenty to choose from. There are some great options not only in Melbourne, but also further afield in regional Victoria - many which are definitely worth the short drive or day trip. Do you have a favourite distillery? Here are a few that are worth a look, but we'd love to hear your views about the best distilleries in Melbourne and Victoria by leaving a comment.
You'll find
Starward at their home in Port Melbourne where their local whiskey matures for 3 years in wine barrels. At the distillery they hold distillery tours, masterclasses and other tasting events. Their drinks list includes Starward's locally made spirits as well as tasting flights including some Kentucky bourbons and a strong cocktail list. You can enjoy your drinks with an assortment of cured meats or cheeses.
Little Lon Distilling Co. on the other hand are all about gin. Their red brick distillery sits just on the edge of the Melbourne CBD. You can grab a bottle of their Little Miss Yoko (a special edition gin with a hint of lychee) or Ginger Mick (unsurprisingly you'll pick up some ginger in this one), or you can stay for drinks or one of the gin tasting masterclasses.
Head out of the city and up to Healesville and you'll find one of Australia's best known distilleries,
Four Pillars Gin. Established in 2013 their simple but iconic bottles can be found at bars and bottle shops all over the country. They produce a range of special edition gins throughout the year, including their popular spiced 'Christmas gin' and the Yarra Valley 'Bloody Shiraz gin'.
These three are a small selection of what's available, but perhaps you've got suggestions of somewhere even better? Let us know what your favourites are, what they offer and where to find them.
