With all our ad-hoc adventuring, we've come across five pristine beaches, all in Caloundra on the Sunshine Coast. Most of these beaches are within walking distance of each other, so can all be enjoyed in one day, or perhaps go to a different beach every day.

1. Dicky Beach

Dicky Beach is both a beach and a suburb located within Caloundra and is the only recreational beach in the world to be named after a shipwreck. A family-friendly beach with its own lagoon, Family Holiday Park , skatepark and Surf Club ensuring that holiday-makers have an idyllic location to have a relaxing holiday away from the more touristy destinations on the Sunshine Coast.

Dicky Beach has to be one of my favourite beach areas, abuzz with families all enjoying the safe surrounds of a very picturesque location.

2. Shelly Beach

Shelly Beach is a coastal suburb of Caloundra with the beach between the headlands of Moffat and Caloundra Heads. Shelly Beach was the site of Caloundra's first hotel in 1885 at the corner of Alfred Street and Victoria Terrace, at the south end of the beach. During World War II Shelly Beach was off-limits with barbed-wire defences.

The day we visited Shelly Beach, this stretch of coastline was fairly quiet, much to our surprise, but then we discovered that it's a sea turtle nesting beach between November and March. How exciting is that? I just wish we could have seen a turtle or two. Marine turtles and their nests are protected under the Queensland Nature Conservation Act and the public are not permitted to interfere or harm them.

Our furry family members have to be on a leash during these times too, ensuring the protection of the sea turtles. From May to October we can allow our four-legged friends to run off-leash on the beach between 4.00pm and 8.00am.

There were walkers out and about and children playing near the rocks, but the beach was otherwise deserted. A great spot to do some private sun-baking if one wants to avoid the crowds.

3. Kings Beach

Kings Beach has to be one of the most popular holiday destinations in Caloundra, with a festive atmosphere all year round. White sandy beaches, rock pools, a child-friendly water fountain with time-delayed spurts of water, an oceanfront saltwater swimming pool and a gentle beach break with protected swimming areas, will ensure you have a fun-filled family holiday experience here.

All the accommodation is so close to the beach, you can unpack and park your car until the day you leave.

With alfresco dining areas on the beachfront too, you can choose to have breakfast, lunch and dinner in locations with stunning views of the ocean.

Named by Surf Life Saving Queensland as the top beach in Queensland for 2015, one can understand the desire to spend a family vacation at such a fun and exciting location like Kings Beach.

New Year's Eve is covered too, with one of the biggest family events on the Sunshine Coast being held at Kings Beach Amphitheatre and Lions Park culminating in a spectacular fireworks display at 9.30pm.

4. Moffat Beach

Moffat Beach has its own unique character that sets it apart from other areas of Caloundra, with a vibrant strip of alfresco cafes and restaurants, great accommodation and a famous surf break.

Protected from the winds by Moffat Headland, the stunning beach has a protected inlet though caution is recommended for swimmers as the area is not patrolled. Tooway Creek is the ideal spot for safe swimming and for the littlies to get their feet wet. For surfers, Moffat Beach offers a perfect point break and also happens to be the home of Australia's longest running surf competition - The Ma and Pa Bendall Classic.

You can admire the surfers showing off their prowess out at sea, while the kids can entertain themselves at the oceanfront playground. A spectacular coastal walk leads from Moffat Beach all the way around to Kings Beach and for the adrenalin junkies there's jet skiing, skydiving and kitesurfing.

5. Golden Beach

Golden Beach is a tranquil family destination, hugging the shores of the Pumicestone Passage, ideal for boaties, fishermen and swimmers with the waters being far calmer than at other Caloundra surf beaches. Playgrounds and shaded barbecue areas make it the ideal spot to spend the whole day with the children.
If you're hungry but not up to doing the whole barbecue thing, pop down to Chill Cafe 89, right on the esplanade with a reasonably-priced breakfast and lunch menu.

This is also one of the best viewing locations to watch the New Year's Eve Fireworks over at Kings Beach, Caloundra.

If you're staying in Caloundra, why not take a walk (or a drive) up to the two lighthouses, which are open every second and fourth Saturday of the month from 9.00am to 3.00pm - a great location to enjoy some stunning views.

In Caloundra there are so many choices of great beaches in close proximity to each other, but these are by far my favourites - which beach is your preference for a holiday or a day of chill-laxing, away from the madden..ing crowds? Or, perhaps, I've missed one, let me know if I have.
