Say goodbye to 2016 and party into 2017
New Year's Eve is creeping up on us and it is time to think about where we would like to spend the last night of 2016. A highlight for many people is New Year's Eve in the City, which is an event held in the city centre with two free concerts and firework displays. There is a family friendly concert at Civic Square before the 9pm fireworks, then a dance party at Garema Place after the 9pm fireworks all the way to the midnight firework display (see website here for more details). For others who would prefer to do something a little different, there are other New Year's Eve celebrations planned around the city so revellers can get together with friends, celebrate with a meal and watch the midnight fireworks from afar. Following are just some of the many events that are happening around the Capital on New Year's Eve - so put the champagne on ice, put Uber onto your phone and enjoy the celebrations and festive beats of NYE, 2017.

Still not sure what to do? These are just some of the hundreds of events that will be happening around the Capital this New Year's Eve, so keep checking Canberra Weekendnotes for more options and see local advertising for more ideas.
Also, why not take a drive up to the top of Mount Ainslie Lookout for spectacular night views of the city, shimmering city lights and the firework displays over the city. Another free option, popular with families, is to take a dinner picnic down to Lake Burley Griffin and watch the family friendly fireworks at 9pm - just follow the crowds for the best vantage points. Also ask your favourite restaurant if they will be open for New Year's Eve and book in fast to secure a table. With spectacular fireworks and friendly locals wishing everyone a "Happy New Year!" as they walk by, it is sure to be a night to remember in the Capital.
Are the fireworks going to be over City Hill or above the lake? There's fireworks lake cruises, dining by the lake to watch the fireworks, but the official site suggests being launched from City Hill. If so, where on earth are the vantage points?
