If you want to cram your 'gram full of blazing glory this autumn, pop on your beanie and boots and get ready to brave the chilly air. The best time to go leaf hunting usually falls between mid-April and mid-May but the trees can be a bit temperamental so this is open to variation depending on the year. Whether you want to stick close to the city or take a country drive, this list has you covered for where to find Canberra's autumn hot spots so rug up and get planning.
Lake Burley Griffin
You can tackle this leafy location either on foot or by boat. Lake Burley Griffin offers the perfect chance to snap some reflection perfection with the red leaves bouncing off the blue lake on clear days, particularly pretty along the stretch between Commonwealth Avenue and the Old Parliament House lawns. The ornamental pears light up Queen Elizabeth Terrace and the stand of oaks nearby are fantastic too. Just around the corner, Lennox Gardens glow with pretty maples putting on a dazzling show. You can get creative and snap them alongside the pagodas and statues which dot the Beijing Garden and Nara Peace Park. For the best views from the water, book a cruise with on the
MV Southern Cross and get a whole new perspective.
The Lake George and Murrumbateman Wine Regions
No matter the season, Canberra's wine country is generally beautiful. With rolling hills draped in vines, cute cellar doors and irresistible cafes, it's hard to find a bad time to visit. But add the additional spice of coloured vines and harvest time and you have the perfect autumn road trip. If you choose Murrumbateman, try the
Poachers Way for some gourmet stops along the way. If you head to Lake George, there's a majestic stand of trees on a road to nowhere just past the vineyards, well worth the extra drive.
National Arboretum
When it comes to autumn splendour, not all trees are created equal. Luckily, the
National Arboretum has so many species that you'll find different forests colouring up as autumn goes on. The birch and maples are particularly pretty and the little trees in the Bonsai and Penjing collection get in on the act too. Make sure you stop off at Dairy Farmer's Hill lookout for a bird's eye view of the autumn colours across Canberra.
Yarralumla
Novar Street in Yarralumla became a little bit Insta-famous in recent years thanks to its tree-lined stretch culminating in a view of Telstra Tower. Yarralumla Bay Oval opposite has a fantastic amount of leaves to roll, jump and scrunch in too. Nearby Weston Park has plenty of autumn action so find a spot to park and take a wander through this tree-lined suburb for some leaf-tacular surprises.
Tumut Festival of the Falling Leaf
Want to take it a little further? The mountain town of Tumut has an entire
Festival of the Falling Leaf dedicated to the turning and falling of the autumn leaves. Running since the 1950s, this festival must be doing something right! And a weekend in Tumut provides the perfect launchpad for some tree-lined drives through the snowy valleys area, a must-do for autumn lovers.
