Buy local, freshly grown flowers in the Redlands
Mostly when you purchase flowers it is for celebrations - birthdays, new baby, Mother's Day etc. Yet everyone deserves a bunch of beautiful flowers too. If you wish to purchase from a gardener and not from a florist or grocery store, where do you go?
The Redlands has always been known for its rich volcanic soil and in previous years being named "the salad bowl" of South East Queensland when much of Brisbane's market garden produce was grown there. In fact, the Redlands was named after that rich red soil, also known as "Krasnozem soil", which has a high mineral and organic content. So there is no doubt the Redlands is also the place to visit if you are looking for the best flowers from local growers.
Weddings N Florist
Weddings N Florist is located at 58 Boundary Road, Thornlands and as the name suggests, weddings are a significant part of their business but do not despair, there are flowers for everyone. Walking into the first shed, you will find lots of artificial flowers, however, if fresh flowers are what you are looking for, a large air-conditioned container is positioned off to one side of the building and this is where you need to go if fresh is your choice.
The Gladioli, striking indeed (Author's Photo)
Not knowing what to expect when I opened the large container door, I was pleasantly surprised to find buckets of beautiful flowers with exquisite aromas. To my amazement, my favourite flower, "the Gladioli", was standing tall at the back of the room just waiting for me. I could not go pass choosing a bunch of those. There were plenty of traditional flowers like Roses, Carnations, Gerberas but what caught my eye was a flower I remembered from my childhood, Snap Dragons. They were in plentiful supply and in many different colours.

Happy with my purchase, I walked back to my car when I noticed dome-shaped undercover gardens with rows and rows of Snap Dragons and Carnations. What I liked about Weddings N Florist is that you could purchase individual flowers, a bunch of flowers or different flowers to make your own bunch. Telephone 0481 461 019.
Redlands Fresh Flowers
Redlands Fresh Flowers are also in Thornlands at 106 Boundary Road and parking is off-road. Offering wholesale and retail, the family-run and owned business has been selling flowers in the Redlands for over three decades. They grow most of their own flowers and take special care in the preparation of flower growing from seedlings and maintaining good quality soil. Their stock includes Lilies, Orchids, Fillers, Natives and Foliage and General Flowers.

This business has two other locations, Rocklea and Rochedale, and will deliver on Mondays through to Fridays. Same-day orders are required to be in by Noon. If you are looking for arrangements already made up, gifts for all occasions and potted plants ready to purchase, this is the place for you. Telephone 07 3206 3796.
Capalaba Carnations can be found at 132 St Anthony's Drive, Alexander Hills. Although parking is on the street, there is plenty of room and easy access to the building, however, if time is of an essence, you could shop online and pick up your purchase at a designated time. All bouquet prices can be seen on their website.
Beautiful Colours and Aromas (Author's Photo)
The fresh flowers were in an air-conditioned container where shelves top and bottom held an excellent variety of choices. To have so many flowers in one small room, the combination of the smells filled the room with desirable scents. Apart from the arranged bouquets to purchase on the day I visited, you could also buy long-stemmed red roses for $5.00 each. To arrange one rose with a small bunch of Baby Breath gives you a lovely gift.
The Flower Farm
The Flower Farm is situated in Birkdale and stands out as you pass as it is painted in a bright pink colour. As it is difficult to cross the busy Birkdale Road, access to the shop is via a farm road around one side of the building, which brings you out at the front and a parking area.
Hard Choices to Make; They are All Beautiful (Author's Photo)
The business was established in 1979 and the flowers are grown on-site. Although most of the original owners have passed on, the younger generations have the same passion and enthusiasm to continue today creating beauty in their flowers.
As you walk into the shop front, buckets of bouquets are displayed. A roll of plastic bags is available for you to place around the bottom of your bunch before taking them home. On the day I visited, I chose a vibrant bouquet of deep red and sunny yellow large Gerberas with Baby Breath. Sitting in my kitchen now, I am immediately drawn to their magnificent colour.
Author's Choice to Take Home
Deliveries can be made to several areas within the Redland as well as hospitals, nursing homes, schools, retirement villages and businesses. More information can be found on their website. Telephone 07 3207 2129.
Carbrook is not really in the Redlands but not too far away and home to Saranah's Flowers. Seen from the busy road, Saranah's Flowers is situated in Coorang Road, Carbrook. Owner Ranjit Saranah's ancestors have a long history in Australia having moved here in 1895, however, Ranjit and his immediate family came here in 1960. He was only a young child at the time and later in adulthood he took on a career to become a scientist. Having this background in the process and properties of the soil and nature's elements has given him a deep understanding of how flowers grow in the right environments.
Ninety percent of the flowers in Saranah's Shop are grown on his property. During our conversation, it was quite obvious Ranjit had a strong passion for what he does and enjoyment in being outdoors amongst nature.
Native Choice (Author's Photo)
At Saranah's Flowers, you can purchase gifts, cards and teddy bears as well as bouquets, arrangements and of course flowers. I chose a native bouquet, which has lasted for weeks while giving me a closer look at what beauty nature provides. Telephone 07 3206 6857.
When you are next out looking for a bouquet or an arrangement to purchase for an occasion, the above are some of the options available within the Redlands region and beyond.
