There are places you can hand pick your own stone fruit
Stone fruit season has commenced in Perth, Western Australia and while we are still getting some from other states, we are at the beginning of the start of our wonderful season for those beloved stone fruit that so many of us like.
By picking your own, as you do with strawberries you will, of course, get the best fruit and to the ripeness that you require for whatever you are making with the fruit - if anything!
Stone fruits are also known as drupes and are fruits that have a pit and hence the word, stone fruit in their name. They are enveloped around with a fleshy outer area. Stone fruits are generally low in calories, with about an average of just 70 calories per cup of chopped fruit making them a good snack for anyone who is worried about weight. They also contain less than one gram of fat and are full of essential vitamins and minerals.
In general, they are a healthy food or snack for anyone to eat as long as you do not eat too many, which I know is very easy to do!
PERTH MANGO FARM, WEST NEERABUP Where: 105 Wattle Road, Neerabup
Well, who doesn't love mango? Yes, I know there are some who do not but to those people - your tastes are not good!
Mangoes are also great to cook both sweet and savoury dishes and you can go pick your own each weekend in late summer and early autumn.
While you are there, you can also have a barbecue, buy things at their farm shop and have fun getting those lovely yellow balls of delish!
FRUIT PICKING TOURS
If you would like the fruit picking experience without the hassle of doing the driving yourself, you can organise a private fruit tour for your group of friends, family or colleagues. This will be a great way to do it as the one driver can also have fun if not driving! Enjoy a morning of fruit picking followed by lunch at the local Swan Valley produce. Make your booking here.
These people open the orchard from April to June. They grow many things including kiwi fruit, tamarillos and also berries. Here the picking of this fruit is with no entrance fee. This is a lovely day out and great fun as well.
APRICOT ACRES FARM - BINDOON WHERE: Lot 2 Toy Road, Bindoon
You can pick your own apricots at this farm and having had a friend who grew apricots, you will get some fabulous juicy apricots this way!
Once again, there are not heaps of orchards who are advertising that you can pick your own fruit, however, as in the strawberry articles, there are heaps of people in the hills and the bottom of the hills and thereabouts, all of which will allow you to pick your own fruit.
