Massages in Sydney can often be quite hit or miss, and if you don't know your way around, a relaxing experience can end up being quite the opposite. When I'm not in Sydney I use Bookwell to find a good provider, but being based here at the moment, it would be odd if I didn't have a few little secrets on how to get a good massage here. To that end, I would like to share a few hints and secrets on how to find a good massage when you're in Sydney.
There are three main types of massage places in Sydney.
Entry Level Massage
Price - $50 to $60 per hour.
Entry level massage places like this tend to be staffed by untrained students or backpackers, which means massage quality can vary greatly depending on how lucky you are on that particular day. Without any real training you are essentially hoping the person just happens to have some natural talent at massage.
In these circumstances it is best to go for a brand that has a few locations at least, as there will then be some standardised training involved and your chances of getting a good massage will be much better.
A good example of this is Andaman Thai Massage with locations in Sydney suburbs. The prices are generally low and there are plenty of deals and discounts. The quality here is much better than most priced at $60 per hour, but there is no avoiding some variation in quality between different masseuses. The fit out is better quality than most, minimalist but decorative Thai stylings.
Reliable massage at a bargain price
Qualified Massage Therapists
Price: $70 per hour.
With more training comes a more reasonable expectation of getting a good massage. The higher price point does not mean you'll never get a dud massage, but it does make it far less frequent. The premises tend to be much higher quality which adds to the atmosphere also and I find that does play a big part in how easy it is for me to relax.
A good example of this is Tian Long Chinese Massage found in Surry Hills in Sydney. The prices are good, being right on the border at $70 per hour. You also get your own private room. This studio also offers massage training, so the quality of the massage tends to be a lot more reliable than other similarly priced establishments. They are a favourite for me, definitely in the sweet spot of price and quality but the decor is not as flash as others at this price.
Quality massage, very reliable
Spa Treatment Massage
Prices - $120 per hour.
There is a pretty big leap in price point between the spa level massage and the $70 per hour massage. For me it tends to be too big a leap and I see more value for money in the previous option. But sometimes you just want to treat yourself, and this is a great way to do it. At spas they generally have a few highly trained specialists, who only do the one thing and therefore you are guaranteed good quality. Also there is not quite as much staff turnover, which is a problem with the cheaper places. This means the staff have more experience, and if you find someone that you really like, chances are they will be there next time as well.
I have always had a great experience at Ciao Bella, they do tend to make the extra effort to make sure the experience is good from start to finish. Admittedly the price point is quite high, but they do sometimes offer deals, and package deals with other services can make it more attractive from a price perspective.
