Follow the smell of sizzling snags for these hot spots
Whether it's a hot summer night or just wanting to cook up some fresh prawns you just bought at the Victoria Market, there are any number of free barbecues you can use in the City of Melbourne and surrounds.
As you well know, everything tastes better cooked outside and locals and tourists will be thrilled to find that Melbourne is turning it on for them - the gas that is. All for free.
Alexandra Avenue and Birrarung Marr
This is one of the quintessential Melbourne experiences. With views over the Yarra River and of the Melbourne skyline, as well as all the water traffic on the river from rowers to party boat goers. The party boat goers in particular love to give you a wave with one hand while they balance their champagne glass with the other.
Visitors can choose from the barbecues at Birrarung Marr on the north bank with views of the Royal Botanic Garden, or go to the leafy south banks of the Yarra River for stunning views of all the major icons and landmarks.

For some reason, people forget about this gem.Yet is only a fifteen-minute drive from the city centre along the Eastern Freeway. There are the wonderful parklands that surround Heide Museum of Modern Art with its fabulous collection of outside sculptures. The picnic area is complete with wood barbecues, open-air tables, a sheltered area and a children's playground.
Don't always think beach when you head to St Kilda. Directly across from the ocean are the Catani Gardens with wonderful palm trees and views across the bay to the city. This is also a great base to explore the many attractions of St Kilda, including Acland Street, Luna Park and more. The gardens feature open-air barbecues and a path leading to the Edwardian-style rotunda, as well as plenty of shade.

Just north of the popular Fitzroy precinct, the stunning and expansive gardens are complete with a bowling green (one that makes lawn bowling trendy), a football oval for watching the local game of cricket or Australian Rules, plus basketballs and tennis courts, and an adventure playground. The 24-hectare gardens include three separate barbecue areas. Tables and chairs are scattered throughout the park.
Flagstaff Gardens are located next to the famous Queen Victoria Market. Perfect. Forage the market for food and then go and cook it up in the shady gardens. Barbecues are on the William Street side of the gardens.
