If you knew what toxic materials went into the manufacturing of children's toys, you wouldn't let one come anywhere near your child. Agreed, they are pretty, colourful, and on occasion even incredibly educational. Besides, you would be considered a terrible parent if you denied your kids the opportunity to own and play with as many of these pretty things as you could afford to get for them. And let's face it; sometimes it's the parents who go goo goo over these little temptations.

Anyway, the point is plastic toys contain toxic stuff like BPA and BPS, even when they claim to be child-friendly and safe. I've tracked down a few toy shops in Melbourne that stock organic, eco-friendly toys that will not harm your little darling and may even last well into their teenage years.

Ecotoys
Ecotoys believe in making safe, eco-friendly toys that are biodegradable, non-toxic, as well as educational. Ecotoys are manufactured using timber from rubber trees and plantation pine. You'll be pleased to know they have a range of soft toys made from certified organic cotton and pure wool. They use vegetable-based ink for printing and recycled cardboard for packing.

You can either shop online at Ecotoys or visit their shop at

651 Burwood Rd.
Hawthorn East
Phone: 03 94447221
Open Monday to Saturday 10 am to 5 pm; closed Sunday.

Earthtribe
Earthtribe, located in Balwyn, Victoria, is another great place to get eco-friendly toys . They are serious about fair trade practices and focus on handcrafted toys made using traditional techniques and natural materials. They are also committed to preserving the age-old techniques that may otherwise become redundant due to modern technology. You can shop online at Earth Tribe or visit their stockists in Victoria and all over Australia . For more details, you can contact them by phone at 0410 619 746 or mail them at PO Box 266 Balwyn Vic 3013.

Honeybee Toys
They like to call themselves the "magical toy shop in Melbourne" and I don't see any reason to refute that. Honeybee Toys have them all—natural wooden toys, organic baby toys, and educational toys. Choose from Australian and European toys that are ethically made from eco-friendly material and designed for unlimited fun with your child in mind. You can shop online at Honeybee Toys or it might be even more fun to visit them for a good old-fashioned toy shopping spree. You'll find them at

Epoche is indeed a toy wonderland. If you like old world charm and get all gooey inside when you see kid stuff that still
exude an air of innocence you most certainly will want to check this place out. Personally, I think dolls with size D cups are ridiculous. If you think along those lines, you will definitely want to get this adorable Waldorf doll for your child. Epoché is all about beauty, spirit, and wonder and they live up to their claim quite well.
