With South Australia open up to intra-state tourists and even some interstate visitors hitting our shores, it seems a lot of people want a quick getaway, for a weekend or maybe longer. So, being only two hours from the city, many are going to the Yorke Peninsula. While a town like Port Clinton is an excellent getaway, most people head a little further down the peninsula's east coast and go to Ardrossan.

With a great fishing jetty, two caravan parks and central to many of the tourist sites of the Yorke Peninsula, it is one of the larger towns of the area. It even has a decent museum for people inclined towards the history of the area.

But one thing I have been asked by friends I try to sell the joys of the area to is: are there any places in town to have a decent meal? Yes, there is a fine Drake's supermarket but what if you don't want to do your own cooking? (Mind you, Drakes do some great takeaway meals, and I really recommend their wraps!)

Well, in Ardrossan, there are many places you can go for a meal (apart from the aforementioned Drakes wraps), either to eat in or take away. This is a list of the ones I have eaten at. For what it's worth, there has not been a bad one I have tried yet. I could easily live on the food on offer here and never cook again.

Okay, let's go.
Wilma's On The Yorke

Next to the area school on First Street is a nice café. Its interior is maintained and it looks quite stunning. I believe that at some point in 2020 new owners took over the café but you would not know - the quality has been maintained. Nice atmosphere, good food and friendly staff. They do takeaway as well as dine in.
Address: Shop 1/14a First St, Ardrossan SA 5571
Phone: 0459-199-973
Recommended dish: Any of the cooked breakfasts (though the cakes are to die for)
Ardrossan Chinese Meals

A take-away only place, and currently open at limited times, though as time goes on the opening hours are extending more and more. Best to ring through your order. But it's the food. Quite standard for a takeaway Chinese place, but it is really good. I've had three or four meals from there. All have been great and there is plenty of food.
Address: 18 First St, Ardrossan SA 5571
Phone: 0426-393-320
Recommended dish: Beef and Black Bean Sauce with Special Fried Rice
Ardrossan Hotel Motel

While I haven't stayed there, friends who have say the accommodation is decent and comfortable. But the food in the dining room is what I am looking at. A decent sit-down place with a nice atmosphere, the food is incredible. You do need to book in before you go, but it is worth it. You can see their full menu at their website ( ardrossanhotelmotel.com.au ).
Address: 36 First St, Ardrossan SA 5571
Phone: (08) 8837-3008
Recommended dish: Beef Schnitzel Surf & Turf
The Coffee House

Tucked in behind a nice little clothing boutique (Bella Yorke), this relaxed eatery is very pleasant. I have enjoyed sitting there and writing. The staff is really friendly and the food is nice. I don't drink coffee, but friends who do recommend this place. Again, you can check out their website ( thecoffeehouse.info ).
Address: 33 First St, Ardrossan SA 5571
Phone: (08) 8837-4068
Recommended dish: Any of their toasted focaccia selections
Ardrossan Bakery

Dine in or take-away, this is your normal country bakery with various baked goods – cakes and pastries – plus sandwiches, pizza slices, coffee and cold drinks. For a quick and easy meal, thoroughly recommended, and this is another place where I have set up the laptop and written while indulging in the nice food.
Address: 39 First St, Ardrossan SA 5571
Phone: (08) 8837-3015
Recommended dish: Any of their pies (though their selection of cream-filled cakes is wonderful)
Mei's Kitchen

(Incorrectly called "Mae's Kitchen" on Google Maps!) This is an interesting little shop. There are a lot of great humorous (although the humour is very Australian) little nick-nacks and signs for sale, but this is more about the food. The type of food only has limited overlap with the Chinese restaurant on First Street, which gives you extra choice. The staff are friendly and while not a lot of room to eat-in, if you do, the atmosphere is good as well.
Address: 26 North Terrace, Ardrossan SA 5571
Phone: 0411-672-243
Recommended dish: Tough. The dumplings are good, but I do tend to go for the Sweet And Sour Pork.
Ardrossan Seafood & Schnitzels

And we finish with the staple of Australian food places – the takeaway fish'n'chip shop. The thing is, the food they serve is actually really good. They also have a good selection of Golden North ice-cream (the best ice-cream) and their menu is wide and varied. They have all the staples – various seafood, schnitzels, chickens, chips, salads, etc. By the way, great chips!
Address: 24 North Terrace, Ardrossan SA 5571
Phone: 0466-238-638
Recommended dish: Beef Schnitzel with chips and gravy (yes, I'm basic, but it is delicious!)
So, if you do go to Ardrossan, or if you find yourself passing through, be rest assured that there are plenty of places to stop for a good meal, eating in or take away. I hope you enjoy!
