The Lunar New Year is fast approaching bringing with it a change of pace from the roaring tiger to the more mellow and tranquil rabbit. The Year of the Rabbit in 2023 is likely to be a little more gentle and relaxed and might present the opportunity for travel. But you don't need to travel far to celebrate in Canberra with plenty of events scheduled for the Lunar New Year.

Dickson Lunar New Year

Dickson, known as Canberra's Chinatown, will be bringing in the Lunar New Year with a bang over two big weekends in 2023.

The festivities will include community group performers, a lion dance, roving artists and the big reveal of a Zodiac Rabbit sculpture. You can party in the Lunar New Year with food and stalls from local businesses, decorations, and an outdoor stage hosting performances throughout the festival.

Dates for the Dickson Lunar New Year event are from 13– to 21 January 2023. Check the website for program details



Sakyamuni Buddhist Centre, Lyneham

For a spiritual way to see in the New Year, the Sakyamuni Buddhist Centre in Lyneham is open to anyone wanting to celebrate. The event traditionally includes vegetarian delights and a chance to explore the many shrines. There will be Lion Dance performances at 930pm and 11:50pm. The celebrations will take place on 21st January 2023 to welcome the Year of the Rabbit.

The Royal Australian Mint

If you want your kids to join in the Lunar New Year fun, Lucy Sparkles and Friends will welcome in the Year of the Rabbit at the Royal Australian Mint. The event is designed for 4 - 6 year olds and will explore the themes of the Lunar New Year and the Year of the Rabbit through singing, dancing, storytelling and craft. Tickets are available here . The Mint will also have a special series of Year of the Rabbit coins available.

When: January 11th from10:30-11:15am. Tickets are $10 and available here .

Ginninderry Lunar New Year

Head to Ginninderry for a Pop-Up Chinese New Year event to celebrate the Year of the Rabbit at Paddys Park. Try some Chinese dumplings, have your name written in Chinese calligraphy and see the Canberra Prosperous Mountain Lion Dance Troupe perform a Lion Dance. From 4pm on 28 January.
