Whether you're a fully-fledged crazy plant person or just starting out on your plant parent journey, it helps to know where to find happy and healthy indoor plants so you aren't going to end up tossing the sad, shrivelled carcasses of your once amazing plants into the compost. Canberra's climate can make sourcing plant babies and keeping them alive a little tricky but there are some great local businesses who specialise in indoor plants. Now, of course, you could hit up the big-box hardware places and, admittedly, they have an increasingly good range of indoor plants at reasonable prices. But if you want to support your local businesses and get some good advice from horticulturalists and bona fide plant lovers while you shop, read on.
Bliss Garden and Giftware, Pialligo
Bliss offers the perfect all-round indoor plant experience. How, you may ask? Because not only do they stock an amazing and constantly changing range of plants including some of the harder to find types, they also have a fabulous range of pots, hanging planters and other little plant accessories (Bliss, just take my money!). And, as an added bonus, the staff here really do know a thing or two about plants and are happy to let you know how to give your little green friends the best possible chance of not only surviving but thriving.
Living Simply, Pialligo
The range of plants at
Living Simply takes me straight back to my 90s childhood - think ferns, monsteras and giant happy plants - but that's not a bad thing. While these plants are less on-trend, they are proven hardy souls and less needy than their more 'grammable cousins. If you want to find a decent-sized plant (or five - they can't be lonely, right?) then this is the place for you. The plants are generally vibrant and healthy, the prices are reasonable and the varieties on offer will mostly be more forgiving of the wacky watering regimes and bad light situations beginner plant mums and dads can tend to throw their new plants into until they work them out.

Greengold Gold Creek**
As well as being a nice little nursery in its own right,
Greengold has the added bonus of doubling as a good escape for the parents who have been dragged to Gold Creek to see the reptiles/dinosaurs/birds/little train. The indoor plants at Green Gold can be abundant one week and all but gone the next but if you time your visit right, you'll find some decent plants. The orchid range in flower season can be fantastic and they also get in a good choice of air plants, carnivorous plants and the usual indoor plant suspects on a good day. The range of planters and plant stands is nice here too. Best of all, if you have a sick plant who is silently screaming 'it's not easy being green!' I'd recommend taking a picture or a leaf sample in and these plant wizards should be able to diagnose the issue and help out with a solution.
Heritage Nursery Yarralumla
It's simply impossible to like plants, live in Canberra and NOT be in love with
Heritage Nursery . It's a plant lover's happy place and has every indoor plant-related thing you never knew you wanted...and more! As well as the usual indoor plant range, the selection of carnivorous plants here is huge, as is the range of succulents and cacti (not technically indoor plants but Canberra means you'll have to let at least some of them live inside with you). Heritage has a wide range of planters and pots and so many orchids when it's flowering season.
As well as the established garden centres, there are some amazing and innovative little local businesses popping up in the indoor plant space too. Offering a mix of online sales, local pickups and mail orders, these guys and gals are enabling crazy plant people across the capital to keep the indoor jungle dream alive. Whether you're looking for you unicorn plant, personalised service and advice or just want to support local businesses, here's the round-up on some businesses growing the local indoor plant scene.
Leaf and Co Studio
What if I told you there was a business in Canberra which is local, supports women and has the goal of bringing the joy and health benefits of plants into our lives? Well
Leaf and Co Studio do just that and they have a website jam-packed with green goodness just waiting to come into your life and help you to make a lush, happy home. As well as a great range of plants and pots, they even stock...wait for it...an indoor greenhouse! Seriously, Canberra, we need to support businesses who bring these things to us so click away! Find them
here .
Love Plants
With an interesting and on-trend range and probably some of the best value for money in Canberra, Love Plants are a great local option. Offering sales through Facebook and a local pick up arrangement, they are based in Belconnen. To keep up with the latest stock, check out their
Facebook page which has regular updates on availability and collection times.
Alouwishes Fleur
If you're crazy about kokedama, the goodies from Alouwishes Fleur will have you tied up in knots trying to decide which one to bring home (take them all says the little voice in your head). If, at this point, you're wondering what on earth a kokedama is, allow me to explain: translated from Japanese, the name means moss ball. The balls grow in a similar style to bonsai and make for a stunning feature plant. They're all hand-tied and made right here in Canberra. Whatever your plant style, you'll find kokedama to love - to see these blissful balls of plant-loveliness, check them out on Insta
@alouwishes_fleur And a bonus public service announcement: they also have terrariums and flower arrangements for sale so why not treat your plant-loving self right now?!
Royal Jungle
A new web-based Canberra plant business who want you to grow your indoor oasis (yes please!), Royal Jungle's range is growing each week. As well as plants, they have some plant-related gifts and propagation stations on offer too. Royal Jungle offer local pick up, local delivery for a small fee or mail order. Find them
here and get your own jungle happening ASAP.
Inspired Succulents
Yep, I know succulents aren't technically 'indoor plants' but I'm including them because the Canberra frosts aren't a succulent's best friend and we all have a sunny window just begging for a succulent (or three)! I love that the guys at Inspired Succulents admit their business started with not much more than a dream and a slight addiction to succulents. Thank goodness they made the dream a reality which means we all get to benefit - there are some awesome lil' suckers available, way more than the run of the mill varieties so if you want a succulent with a bit of pizzazz, you know what to do: click
here !
Local advice, sales and trades
Last but not least, if you want indoor plant information or advice, to check out trades and sales or just need to confirm that you aren't alone in quietly filling every inch of your life with plants, there are some great Canberra Facebook groups. Try
Proud Plant Parents Canberra if you're looking for a space to chat and share advice about plants or
Canberra Plant Market if you're looking to sell or trade plants.
With such a great range of local businesses happily supporting your need for more plants, hopefully, you discover something special to add to your plant brood - and no matter what, just keep growing!
