Born in Madeira, raised in Sydney, living in Melbourne and dreaming of Bali...

People in countries like Japan and Hong Kong have been wearing face masks in public for many years as protection from pollution, but as the world now grapples with the increasing spread of COVID-19 medical professionals are advising everyone to wear masks in public places like supermarkets, or wherever we are unable to maintain the minimum 1.5m physical distance.

The Government has just announced that wearing masks will be mandatory (with a $200 on the spot fine if you leave home without one!) and so there's been a mad rush on face masks here in Melbourne with many chemists and online stores quickly selling out of surgical and fabric masks.

To save you time, I have put together a comprehensive list of sellers - simply scroll down!

Wear a face mask in public to help slow the spread of COVID-19
wear a face mask in public to slow the spread of COVID-19

While wearing a face mask does not provide 100% protection from contracting COVID-19 it is another tool we can use to help slow the spread until we have a vaccine (potentially 12 - 24 months away).

Our COVID-19 toolbox now includes:

keep 1.5 physical distance from others

- wearing a face mask in public

- washing hands regularly with soap & water &/ or hand sanitiser

- sneezing and coughing into our elbows or a tissue

- staying home if we are feeling unwell

- calling the GP & getting tested if we have cold or flu symptoms

You can find more information about wearing face masks at the Department of Health and Human Services website here.

So, it seems that wearing a mask in public is about to become the norm for all of us in the coming months and possibly even years.

If you haven't already purchased a face mask, here's a list of places who are selling them. Please note - some are currently sold out but I'm including them in the list as I'm sure they will get more stock at some stage.

Great research and summary. Thank you. I heard that we should only wear either N95 masks, or masks with 3 layers of thin fabric. Do you know the best place to get N95?

Tam and her family arrived in Australia 30 years ago. Her mum worked long hours in the sewing industry, to make ends meet and support her dream of pursuing a legal career.

Like with many small businesses, her mum's work was affected by COVID19. When masks became mandatory in VIC, her mum decided to sew masks! #supportlocal
