In these tough economic times everyone is being a bit more careful with their money, so why not grab yourself a bargain, or treat yourself in one of Blackwood's op shops? Between them you'll find a massive range of fashionable, chic and trendy items for sale – as well as being able to kit yourself out for the 70s and 80s themed parties.

[ADVERT]In Blackwood's main shopping area there are four in close vicinity. The Save the Children shop (253 Main Rd, Blackwood) boasts 'new seasons in stock arriving daily'. It's got a lot packed into the couple of rooms, including a great $2 rack, kids' books for 50 cents, as well as a selection of clothing and handbags, plus there's an interesting retro-section for those who love this era. I picked up some great pink hotpants and an orange top for a 70s party I was going to from this shop.

The Salvos (3/378-380 Shepherds Hill Rd, enter via the entrance in the shopping centre) is one big store, and has racks and racks of women's, men's and kids clothes, a couple of shelves of shoes, as well as a corner dedicated to an array of books and bric-a-brac, and bedding and curtains. It also has furniture from time to time; when I visited there was a multi-gym, a couple of bikes and a bed too. I could have also picked up a bargain wedding dress and tuxedos too.

Serious bargains are to be had out the front of The Red Cross Shop , (354 Shepherds Hill Rd,) while inside, it's a veritable Aladdin's cave of new and used goodies. There are several rooms to explore. There is second hand clothing for women, men and kids; when I went in, you could've bagged a child's half wet suit and there were some lovely vintage women's coats. There were also fabulous new and used shoes, an array of new and old jewellery, tasteful bric-a-brac and some small items of furniture all wonderfully displayed. Those who enjoy handicrafts and sewing can pick up knitting needles, zips and patterns too.

Further along Main Rd in the Blackwood Plaza shopping centre, those who want to support an animal charity can visit the RSPCA Op shop (Shop 13, 168-170 Main Rd). Outside there's lots of different plants for sale and it's managed to pack an array of clothes, brick-a-brac, kids' toys and clothing into the little shop. Handicraft lovers can grab themselves some sewing patterns and wool, and Crows supporters may bag themselves some of the paraphernalia which was for sale I visited.

Although you won't be able to get yourself a new outfit, you can transport yourself to another world, era or universe by visiting The Book Exchange , also in this shopping centre. The shop is deceptively larger than it appears, and in the words of the owner, David Christophel, 'It's like the Tardis'. Once you enter, you'll lose hours wandering through the several rooms which are lined with floor to ceiling shelving packed with books. From murder and mystery, sci-fi and chick lit to medieval history, kids' classics and cooking, there is something from every genre. Just watch out for Mr Bones in the corner.

The Goodwill shop[/LINK] (148 Main Rd, Blackwood) is very spacious and has a huge selection of new and used items. There's a good selection of women's clothes, both new and used, as well as new accessories including sunglasses and funky tights. One area is dedicated to bric-a-brac, books, DVDs and there's also some bed linen, curtains and furniture. If you're after some gifts, there's a lovely selection of new candles towards the rear of the shop.

If you're after some antiques, pop into The Old Furniture Workshop at the side of the Goodwill shop. Although it's quite small, there's some beautiful furniture, much of which has been lovingly restored to their former glory by the owner. When I went in there were some lovely 1920s dressing tables, a large table perfect for sitting round in the kitchen and some unusual chests. Collectors might also be interested in the range of memorabilia including old coke bottles, biscuit tins and 1960s soda syphons. There's also a cabinet full of some beautiful antique jewellery. The shop is only open on Friday and Saturdays.

Although it's technically in Eden Hills the Blackwood Lions Centre , (8 Colbrook Drive, just after the Karinya Rotary Reserve as you drive out of Blackwood on Shepherds Hill Rd) is the place to be on Saturday mornings for household items. You can quite literally furnish your whole house with the contents of the two sheds. I purchased some very solid shelving at a bargain price, and gave it new lease of life with lick of paint, while friends have bought goods ranging from sofas, retro chairs and garden furniture to bicycles and car roof racks.
