The perfect vanilla slice moments before it...disappeared
The perfect vanilla slice moments before...it disappeared

The search for the perfect vanilla slice is one that can last a lifetime. This custardy crusade is worthy of a tick box under "Religion" on the Census.

Some people perform good deeds, some spend years learning to meditate and others head to the Kingdom of Bhutan. But to those in pursuit of true happiness, I say get thee to the French Lettuce.

At this small, friendly establishment in Carlton, the weary pilgrim is greeted with a very large, very deep, smooth custardy-centre within wonderfully crisp pastry so fresh you can smell it.

The Age says it is the best vanilla slice.

The Herald Sun says it is the best vanilla slice.

And Michaelie Clark says it is the best vanilla slice.

These are mystics worth attending to.

Note, however, that the French Lettuce vanilla slice is not one to eat on a first date. Unless you have snake-like jaws that know how to unhinge, you will find this deep slice tricky to get into with dignity intact. Morsels of creamy custard may wobble onto your lap. A trail of deliciously crunchy crumbs of pastry may speckle your face. And some pilgrims may even make small, embarrassing snuffles and/or moans as they eat.

Regardless of your vanilla slice deportment, you can take comfort that this is a slice entrenched in culture. It's said (at least according to the gospels of Wikipedia) that the custardy forebear of the vanilla slice is none other than the mille-feuille, originating in France.

Vanilla slice pilgrims willing to venture further afield should also investigate Bayswater Cake Kitchen and Tatura Hot Bread, both multiple award winners in the annual Ouyen Vanilla Slice Competition.

Well, I've been called many things, but not yet a mystic until now! Vanilla slice hunting is indeed a journey - and I still stand by my assertion, The French Lettuce slice is far and away the most sublime example of custardy goodness I've had the pleasure to experience :)

No doubt, the best Vanilla Slice in Melbourne is from Aviv Bakery in Elsternwick. Second best is from the Sorrento Bakery.

By far the best Vanilla Slice I know (mega VS fan here) is the Heather Dell Bakery (Yarraville) hand made at $2.60. Made with real cream custard and pastry yummmmm ... this link is a groovy review of their other well below average priced treats. considerthesauce.net/2010/11/25/heather-dell/

The one from green Refectory in Brunswick is pretty special! It has a passionfruit twist, so it's not for the purists, but YUM!

For me it would have to be the ones we used to buy on a Friday from Leos supermarket in Kew. They are delicious and we would keep them in the refridgerator only having to eat a half a one in a sitting as they are so wonderful.

'Goodness Gracious' on Riversdale road, Camberwell do the best vanilla slice. They're light and fluffy on the inside and crunchy on the outside, they also won a 'Vanilla Slice of the Year' award!

Lol! Nicely written, Sue! Bet your book is a laugh! Thanks for the tip. Other journeymen/women to the Wimmera region may know Waak's Bakery, central Horsham CBD & Hall's Gap Bakery (by the creek). Bragging superior custardy contributions, get in early, I say. Annie
