The search for the perfect vanilla slice is one that can last a lifetime. This custardy crusade is worthy of a tick box under "Religion" on the Census.
Some people perform good deeds, some spend years learning to meditate and others head to the Kingdom of Bhutan. But to those in pursuit of true happiness, I say get thee to the
French Lettuce.
At this small, friendly establishment in Carlton, the weary pilgrim is greeted with a very large, very deep, smooth custardy-centre within wonderfully crisp pastry so fresh you can smell it.
The Age says it is the best vanilla slice.
The Herald Sun says it is the best vanilla slice.
And
Michaelie Clark says it is the best vanilla slice.
These are mystics worth attending to.
Note, however, that the French Lettuce vanilla slice is not one to eat on a first date. Unless you have snake-like jaws that know how to unhinge, you will find this deep slice tricky to get into with dignity intact. Morsels of creamy custard may wobble onto your lap. A trail of deliciously crunchy crumbs of pastry may speckle your face. And some pilgrims may even make small, embarrassing snuffles and/or moans as they eat.
Regardless of your vanilla slice deportment, you can take comfort that this is a slice entrenched in culture. It's said (at least according to the
gospels of Wikipedia ) that the custardy forebear of the vanilla slice is none other than the mille-feuille, originating in France.
Vanilla slice pilgrims willing to venture further afield should also investigate
Bayswater Cake Kitchen and
Tatura Hot Bread , both multiple award winners in the annual
Ouyen Vanilla Slice Competition .
