From a young age, I have considered myself a big fan of apples, cinnamon and crunchy things, and to my good luck, when I arrived in Australia, I discovered a heavenly dessert which combines these three things - apple crumble.
It has now been 7 years since my arrival and discovery of this genius invention (whomever created it has unlocked hundreds of smiles around the world). During the last 7 years, I have tasted, baked and hidden from hungry house mates, numerous apple crumbles, and just when I though it couldn't get better than the ordinary recipe, I went to Astonish Patisserie on King William Street. Here I had, in my humble yet knowledgeable opinion, what is the best apple crumble that has ever crossed my lips.
Astonish Patisserie offers a deconstructed version of the all time favourite stewed apples with crumbs on top. It is served on a long chopping board; the fruit is tender and has been slowly baked on top of a thin layer of pastry; the apple chunks are perfectly soft and give away the most aromatic taste of cinnamon and spices and the pastry is buttery and lightly caramelized.
Then you have crunchy buttery golden crumbs (almost shortbread like) piled gracefully on top, and next to the crumble sits a perfectly round vanilla ice cream ball. The combination of the hot and spicy crumble with the coolness and creaminess of ice cream is simply perfection. The pleasure of this spicy and sweet treat doesn't end there; a tiny jar with apple conserve and thick cream joins the parade. It is slightly alcoholic, really sweet and tastes like you have gathered the top 10 apples in the world, juiced their tart sweetness, extracted their essence and caramelized it a little to end up with just a few millimeters of nectar, topped with a little thick cream to break the taste a little. The crumble is garnished simply with two thin slices of red apple, which add the natural texture, taste and colour of apples.
So hands down, this is the best apple crumble I have ever tried. As it is a deconstructed one, you can mix and match the components however you like, or eat them in whichever order you fancy. I will continue to try other crumbles, however I seriously doubt I will find a tastier one. If you are an apple pie or apple crumble dessert lover, head to this spot and try this treat. If you are having a bad day, try this dessert, it will make you smile for sure.
Those who are not too keen on apples or crumbles, Astonish Patisserie has an extensive sweet and savoury menu. They also make great coffee and have a small wine list.
The space is really calm and decorated with warm tones, vintage items and chesterfield couches by a chimney, if you prefer to watch the world go by, you can sit by the window facing King William Street.
So apple lovers and seekers of nice little places in town, head to Astonish Patisserie and try the forbidden fruit, only this time, it will open the gates of paradise!
