Over the past decade or so, the sport of lawn bowls has undergone a huge overhaul. Gone are the days of tottering old grandmas with names like Edith and Esther donning their whites for a morning on the greens, replaced by "barefoot bowls" days aiming to draw in a much younger crowd.

The barefoot bowls phenomenon has taken bowling clubs all over Australia by storm, and it's really not that hard to see why. Combine some gentle competition with a sparkling Aussie summer's day, beer usually served at very reasonable prices and a group of mates, and you've created the perfect cocktail for a relaxing afternoon of fun. Roll a ball down, have a drink, have a snack and have a chat - too easy. If you need any convincing of the merits of lawn bowls, a quick viewing of the classic movie Crackerjack should set you straight pretty quickly.

But with so many clubs realising the potential of barefoot bowls, where is Sydney's best bowling club for some social lawn bowls?

The key ingredients for the ideal barefoot bowls environment are simple:
A relaxed atmosphere (at some venues there always seems to be some cranky old bloke looking over your shoulder and disapproving of everything you do).
Cheap beer. The importance of this factor cannot be over-stated.

And that's it. So where is Sydney's best barefoot bowls?

Paddington Bowling Club has been all over the barefoot bowling trend for years, while the Camperdown Bowling Club and Briars @ Greenlees in Concord also welcome social bowlers.

Harbord Diggers offers "Beachside Bowls", while Manly Bowling Club's Rock n Bowl is always popular. Parramatta RSL and Gymea Miranda Bowling & Sports Club also get in on the act.

But what do you think? Where is Sydney's best barefoot bowls?

At first I thought this was about ten pin bowling, and I thought 'that's going to hurt if you drop the ball.'

In terms of the quality of facility, professionalism of service and overall experience, the Neutral Bay Club takes some beating. I've found that many clubs pack you in, then pack you out after the actual bowling has finished. At Neutral Bay barefoot bowlers can remain at the club post-function and enjoy all of its other facilities until closing.

Toongabbie Bowling Club is where we went for our Xmas Party, and while we didn't get a beautiful sunny summer day, it was still a great experience combining a little competition with a lot of social time. All of our staff found it relaxing and a great way to unwind after a hectic year. Recommend to all comers.

Randwick Bowlo has just been fantastically renovated (Jan 2014) - great outdoor area and undercover BBQ, I heard they're doing groups of 10 barefoot bowlers for $80 as a special at the moment. Well worth a visit.
