'Deck the halls with boughs of holly, 'tis the season to be jolly!'
Traditional Christmas carol

The tradition of decorating our homes for the Christmas season goes back a long, long way. In many parts of pre-Christian Europe, people would decorate their homes with bits of greenery and hang boughs of holly and mistletoe about to celebrate their midwinter festivals. When the Christian Church took over and turned these midwinter celebrations into Christmas, it adopted these decorating ideas. Today, we continue to decorate our homes for Christmas-though the bits of greenery we use to deck our halls these days are more likely to be made out of plastic rather than being the real thing!

For many people (including myself), decorating for Christmas is one of the great joys of the season. So where can you shop for Christmas decorations in Canberra? Here are a few ideas:

Taking place on the weekend of December 8-9, this Super Christmas Weekend will be the perfect time to look for unique and handcrafted decorations for your home. At the Old Bus Depot Markets, 21 Wentworth Avenue, Kingston.

Myer has a wonderful range of themed Christmas décor for your home, including the classic red and green, the lavishly luxe look with their white, silver and champagne colours, a touch of Australiana bushland, and a very merry and bright theme full of adorable gingerbread men, reindeer and candy canes. Myer also has Anthony, this year's charity teddy bear, with $1 from every sale going towards the Myer Community Fund which brings hope to vulnerable women and children this Christmas.
Myer stores are located at the Canberra Centre and Westfield Belconnen.

The Christmas decorations at David Jones include classic and traditional ornaments, glamourous pink trimmings, elegant white and gold decorations, and a very cool sea theme with glass jellyfishes and starfishes. David Jones also has a wide range of Nutcrackers, Santa Clauses, and Christmas woodland creatures.
David Jones stores are located at Westfield Woden and the Canberra Centre.

You'll find a mix of Old World charm, country cottage, vintage, Victorian, and a touch of the whimsical in the Christmas decorations at Totally Country. There's a gorgeous collection of Santa Clauses and Christmas angels, and I absolutely love the figurine of a standing reindeer dressed in a tartan kilt!
Totally Country is located at Shop 9, Federation Square 1, O'Hanlon Place, Nicholls.

For festive decorations that don't cost the earth, then go to Kmart. There's a Nordic feel to Christmas this year and you'll find it in Kmart's wide range of natural wood decorations including reindeer, stars, Advent calendars, and mini Christmas villages. Read more about Christmas at Kmart here.

Costco does Christmas BIG. If you're looking for stunning statement pieces, then you'll find them all here, including an almost 4 metre tall pre-lit Christmas tree and a 1.8metre tall singing Nutcracker. Learn more about Costco's Christmas collection here.

You can also find more festive decorating ideas at the following stores: dusk, Dymocks, Bed Bath N Table, Adairs, Lincraft, Riot Art and Craft, Big W, Target, Aldi, and The Reject Shop.

Wherever you buy your decorations this Christmas, may your homes be filled with the spirit and joy and magic of this most wonderful time of the year!
