The towering animals and humans of South Australia may not be as phenomenal as others around the country, but our big things still continue to fascinate everyone who goes on long drives around the state. So, where can these super-sized structures be found?

I have been able to find at least six of them.

At the far western end, in Border Village , is The Big Kangaroo standing proudly in front of the roadhouse with a bottle of vegemite in its hands. Driving between Perth and Adelaide led me to this large plant-eating marsupial. Made from papier-mache and fibreglass, Rooey II was designed by local artist Bill Metheral in the 1980s to entice travellers to stop.

Also along Eyre Highway are The Big Farmer in Wudinna and The Big Galah in Kimba. I found the eight-metre-tall farmer to be rather stylish with a sun 'head', grain crops 'body' and sheep 'feet'. As for the galah, it marks a very significant geographical location - the halfway point across Australia! The pink-and-grey bird underwent a facelift in 2021 just before its 30th birthday.

Honouring our fellow men did not just stop with the Australian farmers. Kapunda 's Big Miner recognises the contributions of hundreds of Cornish miners here in our state. Sculptor Ben Van Zetten built this oversized statue twice as fire destroyed the original. Established in 1844, Kapunda Mine was the first commercially successful copper mine in Australia. It played a significant role in South Australia's economic development at that time.

Lastly, there is Larry the beloved giant red crustacean along Princes Highway, and of course, the world's biggest rocking horse which needs no introduction.

Where are some of the other big things you've found in South Australia? I would love to know your thoughts.
