The hit song from Matilda the Musical in book form
Minchin & Antony
When I Grow Up is a book bursting at the seams with joy and children's laughter. This colourful and cheerful book was a collaborative effort between Tim Minchin, an Australian Tony Award-winning musician, comedian, actor and writer, and Steve Antony, a successful author and illustrator of several books.
When I Grow Up was published in 2017 by Scholastic Books. It is 32 pages long and suitable for 2 year olds and up. It retails for between $10 and $15.99.
In 2009, Tim Minchin was hired by the Royal Shakespeare Company to adapt Roald Dahl's Matilda into a stage musical. When I Grow Up was one of the songs featured in Matilda the Musical. The stage version had children riding on swings on stage.
The book version of When I Grow Up is an adaption of Tim Minchin's song used in Matilda the Musical. It has the same words as the stage version. There was a UK edition, a US edition and an Australian edition published. Each edition has a different front cover. The Australian edition was published in October 2017 and comes with a bonus recording of Tim Minchin performing When I Grow Up.
When I Grow Up reads like it was written by a child. It has a playful innocence to it that will put a smile on your face. I can remember being a kid and thinking about all of the stuff I was going to do when I was an adult. Adults seemed to have so much freedom compared to being a kid. "When I grow up…" was a conversation that I always seemed to have as a kid.
Reading this book made me realise how much I enjoy being an adult, but also how much I enjoy taking pleasure in my childish side as well.
