It's cold, wet, and dreary – winter is here! But don't despair because there are plenty of rainy day activities in Adelaide , so please read on to discover this season's best festivals and events.



South Australia hosts some very large and most welcome visitors this time of year as southern right whales migrate to the warmer water south of Adelaide. The best place for whale watching is Middleton where they can often be seen splashing around from late May until early October.

With the chilly weather, it's the perfect time to check out the latest movies at the cinema. There are some highly anticipated titles being released this season, including Entourage, Jurassic World, Minions, Magic Mike XXL, and Paper Towns.

If you prefer the classics, then you can see Breakfast at Tiffany's, Ryan's Daughter, and Terms of Endearment thanks to Willsy's Choice Nostalgia Film Screenings at Wallis Cinemas at Noarlunga, Mitcham, and Mount Barker.

The official date for Australia's Biggest Morning Tea is Thursday, May 28, but events can be held throughout the month of May and June 2015. Morning tea events are happening all over Adelaide or you can even host your own – it's a great opportunity to catch up with friends over a cuppa and raise money for the Cancer Council.

This month is your last chance to take the kids (and a trip down memory lane) to see Hairy Maclary and other much loved characters at the Lynley Dodd Retrospective . The exhibition is held at the State Library of South Australia. It's open every day (except the public holiday) from 10 am until 5 pm and entry is free!



There are no rules at this year's Adelaide Cabaret Festival with hundreds of performances to choose from, including a variety of local, national, and international artists. It's held at the Festival Centre from Friday, June 5 until Saturday, June 20, 2015.

Venture south this June long weekend for the annual Sea and Vines Festival at McLaren Vale where there will be no shortage of food, wine, and good times. It's your chance to experience the best of the Fleurieu Peninsula.

Also held over the long weekend is the Hot Air Balloon Regatta in Strathalbyn. There's a family fun day on Saturday, June 6, 2015 with aviation themed activities and entertainment, but the highlight of the event is when the balloons are lit up at night.

The final sessions of Knitting through the War are coming up and what better time to learn to knit than winter? The last of the free workshops are held at the Migration Museum on Saturday, June 13 and 20, 2015, bookings are essential.

Winter seems to be the season for wine festivals, so pace yourself. There's the Coonawarra Cellar Dwellers held over the entire month and the Winter Reds Cellar Door Weekend in the Adelaide Hills from Friday, July 24 to Sunday, July 26, 2015.



Last year's Winter Wonderland at Glenelg was so popular that it's back again, this time from Saturday, July 4 to Sunday, August 16, 2015. Ice skating by the seaside costs $12.50 for adults and $7.50 for children, but book your session soon because they sold out quickly last year.

There's always something fun and interesting happening at the Adelaide Showground. This month, for example, there's the Beer and BBQ Festival from Friday, July 10 to Sunday, July 12, 2015. Then at the other end of the spectrum and the month is the Gluten Free and Healthy Lifestyle Expo on Saturday, July 25 and Sunday, July 26, 2015.

The annual Willunga Almond Blossom Festival is always lots of fun and entry is free. It's on Saturday, July 25 and Sunday, July 26, 2015. The weekend of celebrations includes food, wine, and non-stop entertainment, such as live music, a street parade, market stalls, show rides, and fireworks.

It might well be your last chance to hibernate before spring, but SALA is here so there'll be none of that happening, thank you very much. The state-wide, month-long festival of South Australian Living Artists is the largest visual arts festival in the country. With more than 3000 artists and 500 venues, to say there's much to see is an understatement.



Bouts are held every month, but the Adelaide Roller Derby season comes to spectacular, shin smashing conclusion with the grand finale on Saturday, August 8, 2015 at the Adelaide Showground.

Because there's no such thing as too much vino! The Langhorne Creek Cellar Treasures is on Saturday, August 8 and Sunday, August 9, 2015. Spend the weekend sipping through the back catalogue of the region's wineries.

For more food and wine, don't miss the Barossa Gourmet Weekend from Friday, August 14 to Sunday, August 16, 2015. It's the event's 30th anniversary and there's an extensive program of events with something to suit every taste.

The Strathalbyn Collectors, Hobbies, and Antiques Fair is among the best of its kind in Australia. Buy, sell, browse, and collect on Saturday, August 15 and Sunday, August 16, 2015. There's heaps to see, live entertainment, and shuttle buses operating between the different venues.
