Celebrate living in the outback
Winton is a small town in Central Western Queensland on the Landsborough Highway. It is about 177 kilometres northwest of Longreach, 470 kilometres south-east of Mount Isa and approximately 1,500 kilometres from Brisbane.



During its cooler weather, Winton will be busy hosting some outback festivals. Outback Writers Festival will start the festival season commencing on 25th June until 27th June 2019. Outback Writers Festival is looking for the best outback short stories written by people aged between 12 and 18 years old and aged 18 or more. With special trophy and prizes, this event will attract budding writers from all over Australia. There will be more interesting events during Outback Writers Festival, such as book fair, book launch, masterclass writing session and many more. Author Dan Kelly, Benjamin Lindner, Jaye Ford, Fiona McArthur will be at the festival to share their experience in writing and book publishing.

Vision Splendid Outback Film Festival will return to Winton on 28th June until 6 July 2019. The 2019 Vision Splendid Film Festival will be jam-packed with the amazing program, such as Breakfast with the Stars at the iconic North Gregory Hotel, ultimate nine-day Aussie movie, films workshops, tours and live entertainment. For the littlest ones, Vision Splendid Film Festival has Kids Club and Kids Film. The 6th Vision Splendid Film Festival is also celebrating 100 years of the Royal Open Air Theatre! So it's a perfect time to grab a cold beer, a warm blanket and get cosy under the stars and enjoy the most unique movie-going experience you'll have at the historic open-air theatre.



As the opal capital of Australia, it is expected that Winton will host Queensland Boulder Opal Festival and this year will be held on 12th and 13th July 2019. This festival will showcase opal that has been produced around areas of Australia. The festival will be held along Elderslie Street, between Werna Street and Oondooroo Street. The main street will be closed to traffic, where you will find traders selling rough and cut stones, as well as jewellery pieces, and allied souvenir items. You may also find some surprises!

To keep the spirit of Bush Poetry alive, Winton will hold the 48 Bronze Swagman Award. This bush poem writing competition encourages poem writers to keep producing their new works. Winners will receive Bronze Statuette of the Swagman, designed and sculptured by Daphne Mayo, also will receive money prize. Some winners and poem entries selected by judges will be printed in the 2019 Bronze Swagman Book of Bush Verse. For more information, please go to this website.

Winton's Way Out West Fest 2019 will transform this little Aussie outback town into a world-class music venue with a lineup of international and Australian artists. The biennial Winton Outback Festival will be celebrating its 25th biennial festival from 24th to 28th September 2019. You can reach Winton on road, but if you want to leave the car at home, there are daily coach services into Winton, operated by Bus Queensland or travelling by train with Queensland Rail's Spirit. There is also flight services operated into Winton twice-weekly with Regional Express (REX).
