We're so very lucky in Victoria to have so many theatres to frequent; in the city, in the outskirts, and even in the suburbs. Living where I do in the city of Stonnington in the Prahran area, I'm spoilt for choice with all the following theatres either just a 4km trip away or a 12 min walk from where I live. Chapel Off Chapel, The MC Showroom, Cracked Actors Theatre, Theatre Works, The Palais Theatre, the Alex Theatre, Gasworks Theatre and of course The National Theatre and more - as the city is just 7kms away, and a short train or tram ride for me. As the phrase goes - flat out like a lizard keeping up with what's on at every theatre so as not to miss out. There's amazing theatre happening at the small venues all the time, and it makes entertainment so affordable and date night more interesting, while supporting the Arts, live entertainment and the performers.

A continuing legacy of Australian performing arts pioneer Gertrude Johnson who established The National Theatre Movement in 1935, The National is a not-for-profit organisation that strives to support communities through the arts by providing an accessible venue and a centre for training emerging artists for generations to come. Australia’s longest-established drama school, a preeminent ballet school and a 783-seat proscenium theatre, housed in a historic beaux art building, The National was originally constructed in 1921 as a 3000-seat cinema and stands today thanks to the selflessness, determination and inexhaustible enthusiasm of a truly remarkable woman who was born in Hawksburn Victoria in 1894. You can ensure this legacy continues by supporting The National Theatre which in turn supports the future stars of stage and screen.

Located at 20 Carlisle Street, St Kilda, Shows at The National Theatre are as diverse as our tastes, as you can see from the images here.
