A local guide to what's on around Adelaide in July
Midwinter in Adelaide begins to bring the properly chilly weather to town yet Adelaide shines through with winter themed events and experiences that are only made possible by the cold weather. There's wine weekends, community events, food festivals, music festivals and tech expos. In addition, there's pop up skating rinks to enjoy and a whole stack of Bastille Day events! This isn't an exhaustive list, so if you can think of any more great events around Adelaide this July, comment below!
Umbrella Winter Sounds When: 12th – 28th July
Where: All over Adelaide and the hills Cost: Varies
Umbrella Winter City Sounds is an open access live music festival presented by Music SA. The 17 day festival heats up the city and suburbs during winter with an exciting smorgasbord of over 350 live music events.. Established in 2016, Umbrella continues to grow each year and features contemporary performances by local, national and international artists across pop, rock, hip hop, punk, jazz, world music, metal, folk and everything in between! Hybrid World When: 20th – 24th July Where: Adelaide Convention Centre and MOD
Hybrid World Adelaide is a digital entertainment and technology expo that lets you explore the intersection of real and digital worlds. It has something for everyone over the three days. Enthusiasts and the just plain curious can mingle and learn, find out about the future of technology and entertainment, and enjoy opportunities for coding or group video gaming sessions. Alternatively you can try your hand at robotics and virtual reality. There are some paid workshops but the interactive program activities are free. There's also an industry conference. Spotted a knight wandering the streets? Seen a flight of fairies on the bus into the city? That's because Adelaide favourite anime, video games and cosplay convention hits Adelaide every July at the convention centre. This year, AVCon will be bigger and better than ever, featuring the usual massive exhibition of all things video gaming and anime, an emerging artists alley, a great range of guest panels and signings and to beat the hunger so you can battle on, there's the cosplay themed 'Maids Café' to stop for a quick bite and a drink. Flip-Side Festival is an Adelaide-based celebration of music and art, with a focus on local and female talent. Get weird and wonderful with experimental and psych vibes on Saturday night, and mosh your way through a girls-to-the-front line-up at our Sunday sesh. Wicked tunes, visual arts exhibition, live painting, performance and creative workshops all weekend. Details here.
Beer and BBQ Festival
When: Friday 12th July – Sunday 14th July
Where: Wayville Showgrounds, off Leader St.

The Beer & BBQ Festival is back for its 5th birthday, so come and celebrate! Brewers, cidermakers and more come together to collaborate on hyper limited brews from all over the country. 2019 features the debut of so many BBQ delights at Beer and BBQ festival. Come try the best from the likes of Burn City Smokers, 8 Bit Burger, Comida, Toly Vietnamese and The Ghetto Smoke Show. There'll also be a food truck alley for the first time in 2019. Music is a huge part of the Beer & BBQ Festival and this year the festival brings musical greats like DJ Yella from NWA, Frenzal Rhomb, Sampology and many more.
In addition to all the above there's live art, brewer and chef debates, markets, sideshows, and contests. Can an event like this be child and dog friendly? Yes, it can! (Sunday arvo session)
The event features four distinct sessions: Friday night is 'Bright lights, Beer City', Saturday's day event is 'A Hop Odyssey', Saturday night is 'Top of the Hops' and Sunday is 'Hair of the Dog'. WINTER ICE SKATING
Skating At Victoria Square

The winter wonderland returns to Victoria Square this winter for another season of family fun on the ice. An ice skating rink, ice slide, carnival rides and a winter food and drink market make this a cool winter night out! More info here.
Winter Wonderland at Glenelg
When: 28th June – 22nd July

For three weeks in July, Glenelg will be turned into a Winter Wonderland with a huge covered 450 square metre ice rink and toboggan slide on Moseley Square. Come rain, hail or shine; morning, noon or night, bring the family and skate by Adelaide's favourite beach. Skaters can enjoy 1 hour sessions between 10am and 8pm Sunday to Thursday and additional 8.30pm sessions on Friday and Saturday nights. Winter Wonderland is an affordable event for the family. Bookings are recommended.
Ice Skating at the Adelaide Ice Arena
When: All year round
Where: Adelaide Ice Arena – Thebarton
Cost: $20 adults
Adelaide's original, not-for-profit, sports oriented ice rink hosts daily public ice skating sessions starting at just $20 for adults. You can even book free half hour come and try skating lessons on Saturdays! Book in for the snow play sessions every Thursday and Sunday and let the kids make snowmen and play in the piles of snow. The Ice Arena has Adelaide's largest expanse of ice to skate on and is an Adelaide institution. Why not give the oldest, biggest and most community minded ice rink in town a go these holidays? Bonjour Barossa 2019

This event will see the iconic Seppeltsfield Barossa Village transformed into a Parisian style market on Sunday 7th July. This festival will celebrate the best of South Australia's French artisans; Dough, Coffee Crepe, Chocolique, The Oyster Bar, Barossa Valley Cheese Company, Owen Andrews Barossa Catering, Barossa Coffee Roasters and Barossa Valley Ice-cream are just a few. The "Le Petit" - a children friendly play zone - will feature face painting, cupcake decorating and Punch & Judy puppet shows. Keep up to date here.
Willunga Almond Blossom Festival

The Willunga Almond Blossom Festival is a major event on the regional calendar, attracting families and friends for a weekend of fun, fireworks, food, market stalls and a street parade. 'We also invite you to join us for our annual Almond Blossom Ball on 3 August, which will feature dinner by Chef Todd Steele and fabulous entertainment by local musicians,' says festival organiser Heather Williams. Adelaide Plains Festival of Words

Cost: Free to attend
Adelaide's writing and poetry community comes together in this excellent grass roots event held around the township of Gawler. It features workshops, open mic events, poetry competitions, a train ride with poetry and photographic exhibitions. Best of all, most of the events are free to attend. Join an inspiring group of Adelaide writers, poets and photographers and indulge your passion for the written and spoken word. Details here.
