What's Happening at the South Road Overpass

South Road is one of Adelaide's busiest transport routes, carrying around 50,000 vehicles every day between Cross Road and Anzac Highway. On Wednesday January 18 the steady rumble of heavy traffic came to an abrupt stop though, after pieces of concrete were found to have dropped from the tram bridge overpass at the former tram crossing.

A cyclist riding the Mike Turtur Bikeway across the bridge noticed a slant in the road surface, and this section of South Road was immediately shut to the public. The South Road closures caused total pandemonium and chaos to traffic south of Adelaide, with northbound traffic diverting along Cross Road and clogging it completely.

After two days of pain endured in traffic jams, commuters south of Adelaide have now wised up. Most people travelling to work on Friday took alternative routes to the city, with Marion Road and Goodwood Road bearing the brunt.

Meanwhile South Road near the overpass remains closed as engineers grapple to fix the problem. From underneath the problem is obvious, with one span of the tram bridge tilted well off horizontal. A crack is also evident in the support for that part of the bridge span.

Workers were busy at the South Road tram bridge on Friday, and nobody was allowed to pass directly under the bridge. Pedestrians and cyclists are able to take a short detour around the bridge when travelling north-south, but the Mike Turtur Bikeway remains closed. Glenelg trams are now able to use the South Road overpass but travel slowly past.

Latest reports from SA Planning, Transport and Infrastructure have not given an estimate of when South Road may re-open. They recommend finding alternative routes in the meantime on the Traffic SA website or with the Addinsight app on your smartphone. And let's hope that the South Road Superway is built to a better standard.

While news of the South Road closures has been mainly grim, there is some humour to be found. Only a couple of metres from the twisted bridge span is a mural and a prophetic poem which starts the bridge is bent as a bow over South Road...

A south coast resident has also put the bridge up for sale on Ebay but the listing appears to have gone by now.

The South Road closures have had a devastating effect on neighbouring businesses, especially those south of the tram overpass. All businesses in the area have remained open but many motorists are confused by barriers to entering South Road toward Anzac Highway.

**Please note: South Road between the overpass and Cross Road is open for business as usual. Food shops including the Village Bakery, Subway, and Chapati House 2 in the Black Forest shopping centre remain open, as are the Chaos Bazaar costume hire, Glandore Hydro and Black Forest Veterinary Surgery.

Now is probably the best time ever to use these businesses as you won't have any problems parking!**
