In this article I want to highlight some of the small businesses that are alive and well in Elaine. If you're out on the road driving between Geelong and Ballarat, pop into the Railway Hotel, Elaine, for a meal or drink. Or stop and buy a pie and hot cuppa at the milk bar. The country town of Elaine appreciates your patronage.
This is a "feel good" article as it describes the decline and the rise of a small country town.

The Story of Elaine - the little down that did!
Elaine is a small country town with a hotel, a milk bar / service station, and a few small businesses. There used to be a primary school at Elaine, but that has since closed.
In 1862 the Geelong - Ballarat railway line came to Elaine, and a local railway station was opened. Today only grain and freight trains run through Elaine.
In March 1859 a Post Office opened and was named Mount Doran. It was renamed Elaine Post Office in 1872.
The town of Elaine had all but disappeared off the map when a government grant paid for the local recreation club to undergo a major rejuvenation.
For more information on the town of Elaine see the article 'Elaine, the little town that could' published in the Age, 15th June 2013.
