What the Fandango?! - Fringe World Review
What the Fandango?! at the 2019 Perth Fringe World Festival was a chance to meet up with friends at iconic venues and again enjoy the antics of a true entertainer in Robert Hoffman, aided by the superb musicality of Cathie Travers.
The Ellington and the Sonar were booked out and the atmosphere was fun. At the Ellington in Northbridge people chatted, enjoyed a beverage or two and some tucked into share platters and nibbles as they awaited the return to the stage of last year's hit Robert Hoffman's
What the Fandango?!, a South-American themed burlesque comedy.
The intimate style and audience participation of
What the Fandango?! is a refreshing change from the usual screen delivery on various electronic devices. The live comedic performance from an entertainer such as this "giant" of a performer of operatic fame makes a great impression. Robert Hoffman has an outstanding presence on stage not just through his stature but because of his booming voice and his ability to say a thousand words with a look or a gesture.
Hoffman's array of roles was preempted before his arrival on stage by clothing racks with wigs aplenty, sparkling colourful spangly dresses and mysterious coats and scarves. The audience knew they were in for some fun.
Travers' musicality too featured throughout the performance, from musically announcing Hoffman's arrival on stage, superb backing to his songs, musical support during the seamless and funny onstage costume changes right through to when Hoffman mingles with the audience after the finale.
Hoffman was as brilliant and sparkling as the slinky red costume of the cabaret singer; his stage presence and enormous voice linking the various comedic skits together.
The characters came to life and music and song bounced along in a very enjoyable evening of entertainment. It is no wonder that the audiences of the Perth Fringe Festival clamour for more.
