What the Fandango?! at FRINGE WORLD Festival
Perth's own Robert Hofmann introduced his four colourful and quirky characters, Dr Gaye Thyme, Sister Virgillious, Helmut Wunderlicher and Susan Higgins, in the award-winning cabaret
Desperately Young at Heart four years ago. Having captured the heart of audiences, they have returned to the stage in
What the Fandango?! at Perth Fringe World.
With a flavour of South America and beyond Hofmann, combines comedy and cabaret in
What the Fandango?! With an amazing, strong voice, Hofmann has sung with West Australian Opera but turned to cabaret in 2014. Helmut Wunderlicher showcases Hofmann's voice as he reworks standard love songs into humorous same-sex serenades. His rendition of 'Strangers on the Net' is hilarious.
The glamorous goddess, Dr Gaye Thyme, regales the audience with tales of her husband. Sister Virgillious is an Irish outspoken nun who doesn't hold back but my favourite, and it seemed the audience's favourite, was Susan Higgin, an evangelical guitar playing singer (if you could call her enthusiastic wailing singing!) Susan was accompanied by an audience member who contributed to her song with unusual percussion instruments which had the audience in stitches.
The characters in the show are accompanied by Flossy (Cathie Travers) playing the piano accordion as they sing, dance and shimmy through costume changes. Cathie Travers is one of the finest accordionists in Australia and has collaborated with many artists including the Australian Chamber Orchestra and Barry Humphries. In What the Fandango?! she struggled at times to keep a straight face as Hofmann entertained the audience.
The world premiere of
What the Fandango?! can be experienced in the De Parel Spiegeltent at The Pleasure Garden during Perth Fringe World 2018 from February 13 to 17 at 5:45pm.
