But what is a friendship bracelet? It is a simple and heartfelt act of giving and expressing friendship to another by offering a friendship bracelet which is worn as a wristband. The bracelets are often handmade (making them even more personal) and can feature a series of threaded beads which are hung on an elasticised string or embroidery thread. Some styles are made from weaving macrame-style knots.

The bracelets are thought to have originated from the Indigenous Peoples in Central and South America where according to tradition, placing a bracelet onto the wrist of a friend is a symbol of friendship. It is worn to honour the time, energy and love put into their friendship.

Friendship is understood to be a major part of maintaining positive mental and physical health as strong social connections have a reduced risk of depression, high blood pressure and an unhealthy body mass index.

How did this jewellery tradition come to be popular with Taylor Swift? Well, Taylor references friendship bracelets in the lyrics to her song "You're On Your Own Kid" where she sings:

Cause there were pages turned with the bridges burned
Everything you lose is a step you take
So make the friendship bracelets

With that, Taylor's fans across the globe have heard the call and taken to making, wearing and swapping the colourful, original bracelets at concerts and among their friendship groups. Popular styles include beads spelling out the maker's or friend's name, a message, phrase or word or simply a colourful collection of beads.

So, if you are lucky enough to be going to a Taylor Swift concert, it is a good excuse to get crafty and make your own unique bracelet to wear or swap. You can even carry on the ancient tradition well beyond the tour and offer an act of kindness to a friend or stranger by giving them a bracelet. It is sure to bring a smile to their face.
