Now is the time to head to Middleton on the Fleurieu Peninsula for the whale watching season. Whales can be spotted between April and July in these sheltered waters and a great way to see them is by walking along the Encounter Bikeway, between Basham Beach Port Elliot and Middleton Point.

Car parks can be found at the Basham Beach end of the path or at the junction of Surf Street and Ocean Parade at Middleton. There are bench seats along the way and signs can be found at the best vantage points, explaining what to look for.

It pays to stop and get accustomed to watching the water and working out where reef and rocks are and what could be a whale. At a quick glance a whale can look like a dark line on the surface of the water until you see a telltale spray of water from its blowhole.

Make sure to rug up for the weather conditions and with patience you may be rewarded with a display of tail lobs or slaps and breaching, as adult whales and calves cruise along this part of the coast.

When you do spot a whale, it's tempting to take plenty of photos of these huge creatures, but take time to just watch them for a while to marvel at their sheer size and grace in the water.

If you're not lucky enough to see a whale, you won't be disappointed as the scenery along this picturesque bikeway is worth getting outdoors for in winter.
