Swimming has been something that I've enjoyed since I was around 7 years old. It's such a calming and relaxing experience, where you can choose to float around or dive deep to clear your mind and give your body a nice refresh (literally and metaphorically speaking).

When I went to Wet Sounds last year , I had no idea what to expect. I jumped into the pool and swam around for nearly an hour and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience, so much so that I decided to return this year.

True to its namesake, Wet Sounds is all about experiencing sounds at different depths of the pool. The deeper you go, the more intense yet relaxing the music is, compared to how harsh and loud it seems at surface level. There are strobe light effects that are channelled throughout the show, which represents a bunch of different moods and settings that were being reflected in the performance of the divers underwater. Vines and roots are scattered throughout the 5 metre pool, which adds a subtle touch to the underwater experience. The divers stationed themselves at the base of the pool at 3 metres and later, at 5 metres, to present with impeccable skills around performing aerials and contemporary dance, with the use of minimalist props such as pieces of fabric and a weighted rope.

It is a weird yet satisfying feeling to be immersed into a different world and appreciate art through a different medium, which uses a setting like a swimming pool as an interesting option of a stage for performance. Although you are surrounded by 50-something strangers, who swim alongside you, there is a serene feeling of Zen that is achieved, once you go underwater. I can easily see this as an appealing option for adults and children with sensory needs, because it activates your mind, body, and soul in a manner that is not only relaxing but allows you to explore something new and riveting for your physical and emotional states.

Swimwear a must, goggles highly recommended, pool noodles supplied, snorkel equipment available for hire ($15, cash only).

Wet Sounds has a couple more shows on till Saturday this weekend - don't miss out! Held at the Adelaide Aquatic Centre in North Adelaide, book your tix to this fantastic experience here .
