Water slides to add to your MUST DO list
Are you ready to get wet and wild on the Gold Coast? Here are my top picks for thrill seekers and adrenaline junkies at the Wet 'N' Wild theme park on the Gold Coast. I put my body on the line to test all of the following rides for you, because I'm a generous and caring person, and also because my kids made me go on them.
I have given ratings on both the wetness factor and wildness factor for each ride using the following scale:
Wetness / Wildness Ratings ☆ no towel required / not scary at all ☆☆ some splashing / a pleasant ride ☆☆☆ you get moderately wet / moderately scary ☆☆☆☆ you will get very wet / an exciting, thrilling ride ☆☆☆☆☆ prepare to be totally drenched / you may just lose your mind from fear
The freefall of the Aqua Loop
The Aqua Loop is the ultimate adrenaline rush. It is for single riders and height and weight restrictions apply. There is no tube but you clip on a back/neck support at the top of the ride. You stand inside a capsule, on top of a trap door, and wait for the countdown before you are dropped feet first into the free fall. The 12m vertical free fall feels like it lasts forever but in reality is only a few seconds. As you travel at speeds of up to 60km per hour water smashes into your face, requiring you to close your eyes and your mouth as you head around the loops and finally exit the slide. While not a pleasant experience it is definitely a must for thrill seekers and adrenaline junkies.
From the outside, this ride doesn't look very scary at all, just a regular tube slide with a few twists and turns. But don't let this innocent façade fool you. This is one of the scariest, most terrifying, rides in the park. The ride seats two people on a tube, one in the front and one in the back. As you enter the slide you realise why the ride is called the Black Hole. This water slide is fully enclosed with no lighting - it is pitch black in there. You can't see where you are headed and you can't see what twists and turns are coming up next. You are literally blind and are sliding through the darkness, at 40km per hour, with no control. As you scream you wonder what is going to happen next.......it is absolutely terrifying!
The Tornado is the giant funnel which gives you big thrills and also gets you very wet. The ride seats up to four people in a massive tube which you carry up the stairs to the top of this 15-metre ride. The ride starts with an enclosed tube before you are spun into the giant funnel. Inside the funnel, you spin and slide while being sprayed with water before heading into the eye of the storm and getting drenched at the end of the funnel .A thrilling and fun ride for groups of 2 - 4 people, which you'll want to ride again and again.
Big thrills, a steep drop and a sense of zero gravity combine to make the Kamikaze one of the top terrifying rides at this park. You will need to grab a partner and a tube to sit on before heading up to the top of this 11-metre slide. As you slide down the drop of 70 degrees you can feel the speed of this slide before you start the ascent up the opposite wall of this U-shaped ride. The tube is going so fast that you feel like you will slide right over the lip of the opposite wall, but somehow you stop just in time and you continue sliding side to side to the bottom of the ride. There are big thrills on the Kamikaze but you don't get very wet on this one.

Mach 5 Sidewinder & Jetstream
The Mach5 Slides - Jetstream in the centre and Sidewinders on each side
After experiencing the first four rides on this list the Sidewinder is actually a nice, gentle, enjoyable water slide. The Sidewinder is the longest slide at Wet N Wild and can take up to three riders in the one tube.
The other slide on the Mach 5 Ride is the Jetstream, a single rider body slide which looks super fast & exciting. Unfortunately, it was not operating the day we visited so I am unable to rate it.
Wet Rating: (for Sidewinder) ☆☆☆
Wild Rating: (for Sidewinder) ☆☆
While not in my Top 5 I would like to give a special mention to the Mammoth Falls ride. It seats 2 - 4 riders on a large round tube which thankfully you don't have to carry to the top of this 25m high ride. This slide is similar to a white water rafting experience where your raft spins as you travel down the slide, getting you very wet in the process. It is a great ride for the family to enjoy together, not too scary but lots of fun, and therefore deserves this special mention.
Wet Rating ☆☆☆☆
Wild Rating ☆☆
It is important to be aware that height, weight and health restrictions apply for some rides. For information about ride restrictions click here.
When you've had enough of the thrill rides you can chill out at the Wet N Wild Wave Pool
We visited Wet 'N' Wild out of season which meant there were absolutely no queues for rides but also meant there were a few rides not operating on the day we visited and were therefore not included in my list. These were Surfrider, Jetstream and Calypso Beach. Similarly, I did not include the rides you pay extra for such as Skycoaster and Flowrider in my review. You'll just have to try them out for yourself!
Wet 'N' Wild is located on the Gold Coast at Oxenford. It is open every day of the year except for ANZAC Day and Christmas Day. For information about visiting the park please click here.
If you're looking for thrills of the wet and wild variety, add these to your MUST DO list, if you dare.
