Which WA Region Has the Best Sunsets?

No one can argue that West Australian sunsets are anything less than spectacular, but which region can lay claim to having the best of the best?

If you've followed my articles over the years you will have noticed I have a particular fondness for West Australian Sunsets. Having recently moved to Karratha I've now witnessed sunsets in every region of WA.

This is written no particular order as I can't decide. If you have a favourite, let us know why in the comments section!

There is no doubt in my mind that this is WA's greatest, and most difficult unanswered question.

Southern WA

Southern WA
With an endless stretch of white sand beaches, greenery as far as the eye can see, glassy river splitting the middle, shiny CBD in the centre and the Darling Ranges as a vantage point, in any other part of the world Perth would undoubtedly be the number #1 sunset spot in the country.

The capital of WA has so many fantastic spots to watch and photograph the sunset, I dare say you could find a new picturesque spot every day of your life! Does it beat the vivid colours of the north, the tranquil surrounds of the south or the patchwork interior of the centre though?

Peel has some beautiful natural surrounds to add to the Indian Ocean sunsets. From peaceful inlets and lakes to lush green forests it is one of the more underrated regions of WA.

The rivers are bordered by overhanging trees inland, while crystal blue waters dance in the evening sun off the coastal towns. Even the ancient stromatolites can add interesting new features to evening snaps.

South West
Not even the information might of the internet can do the South Wests beauty and intrigue justice. The only way to truly experience the region is to live there... forever. But where does one start with sunsets?

Rolling forest and farm covered hills, lines of grapevines, untouched beaches and rock formations, quaint country towns. Trying to find a place that you can't see a good sunset is a much harder task here.

Great Southern
The romance surrounding the Great Southern region is slowly but surely boiling to the surface in recent times. It's a more natural, pure version of the South West. And though it's beaches may not face the evening sun, there's no shortage of beautiful locations to watch it from.

Rocky outcrops and cliffs set amongst deep green surrounds can make for some dramatic evening photos while inland, the old school agricultural land provides plenty of intrigue from rusted machinery to ridge lines and piercing rays through roadside trees.

Central WA

Central WA
The inland region of WA is a beautiful wasteland of parched land, starved lakes and some of the most hostile living conditions on earth. In the centre of it all is the urban outpost of Kalgoorlie.

Red dirt and red skies in the Goldfields

This barren, almost post apocalyptic land makes for some striking photography due to the great interplay of colours between sun and sand.

The Wheatbelt has become pretty famous amongst tourism for it's patchwork agricultural land. It's a great region to take in the sun set in one of Australia's last truly iconic locations.

Everything in the Wheatbelt screams Australian and it can be easily reflected in photography. Quirky sculptures, rustic fencelines, rocky outcrops and sparse bushland can all aid you in that perfect photo.

Mid West
The Mid Wests coast transitions between white sand beaches and coves to dramatic red cliffs as you move up the coast. Inland is a surprising mix of different terrain like huge sand dunes, arid salt lakes, scrub land and deep green rolling hills.

The Mid West has a whole packet of great places to catch the sunset then. Kalbarri and Dongara are two of it's more popular locations but even inland towns like Northampton, with its seemingly out-of-place greenery, can be worth a look.

Northern WA

Northern WA
Well, I've just moved here and all I can say is WOW. The scorched red-brown earth and soft cloud formations combine to give an amazing warm evening glow. The flat landscape is dotted with ranges and peaks to add intrigue.

Karratha, Karijini, Dampier and the Burrup Peninsula are just a few of the great places to check out. In a similar fashion to Perth, Karratha is sandwiched between ocean and hills. Unlike Perth, Karratha also has the peninsula towering over the horizon. On the Burrup Peninsula you've got a lot of ancient, dark red rocks which are always nature photographers dreams.

It's hard to argue against the Kimberley's claims to have the best of the best. The untouched wilderness is postcard perfect where ever you go. The Pindan dirt and vivid red cliffs collide with glassy tropical waters along the the Dampier archipelago.

Cable Beach and Roebuck bay are two of the most popular spots, but by the Kimberley's standards they're mearly average. Cape Leveque, Gantheume Point, Horizontal Falls, Lake Argyle, Gibb River Road... there's surely a list as long as the Internet it self of great spots for sunset snaps in the Kimberley's.

The Gascoyne holds two of WA's greatest natural features - Shark Bay and the Cape Range National Park. It's in this region that the ocean looks it's most spectacular. The turquoise waters lap up against high cliffs and ranges from Shark Bay to Exmouth.

Further north in Carnarvon, the sun sets over tropical mangroves dotted with fishing boats returning from a day at sea bringing home the bread. While I haven't seen it myself, apparently when the Gascoyne River flows (which can be up to 1km wide) it is truly a sight to behold... one doesn't need a big imagination to wonder why.
