Free bands, great multicultural food, awesome rides and a monster trash and treasure sale -- yep, the West End State School Fiesta is on again this year, running from 10am-4pm on Sunday 2 June.
Fiesta is a school fete, but one that springs from the creative, crazy, cross-cultural heart of West End. It's not like any other school fete I've visited. The food is better, the entertainment is cooler, and the vibe among the kids, families and others who go is cruisy and uniquely West Endish.
Small people are well-catered for with rides, games and sideshow-style stalls. Oh, and plenty of yummy treats, including strawberries dipped in chocolate, home-made cakes and corn on the cob.
But what makes Fiesta really different is the quality and variety of bands that play and the wide range of great multicultural food, all of which reflect the creative and diverse make-up of the school itself.
This year, two stages will host eight bands, including funk-reggae fiends
Chocolate Strings , bluesy folksters
The Rusty Datsuns , smooth cocktail crooners
Sebastian's Habit , and indie rockers
A View of the Woods .
Some of the bands feature parents from the school, while others feature local West Enders. They're all good and get progressively rockier as the day goes on.
On the food side, mountains of spring rolls are rolled in preparation for Fiesta, empanadas are made by the hundred, and there are always heaps of delicious vegetarian options. There's also a bar if you're over 18 and want to enjoy a beer or wine.
And, if you're an op-shopper, the trash and treasure is another drawcard, but make sure to get there early to find the best stuff. You can also buy home-made jams, preserves and pickles, home-made cakes (including healthy and gluten-free options), and native seedlings and plants. There's also a second-hand book stall.
Everybody's welcome at Fiesta, provided you come with a mellow heart and a willingness to have fun.
So why not whack it in your diary now as a gorgeous way to spend a sunny winter Sunday?
Oh, and every penny you spend (not that you'll need to spend much to have a really great time) goes to the school P&C for their projects.
